Positive fit test and colonoscopy result.

Hi,Id just like to share my experiences that ive been through over the last few weeks for the benefit of people who are going through the same thing.

Im a 50 year old male and I recently had a fit test result of 16. Not massively over but over nonetheless. Immediately I'm thinking the worse and I was convinced I had bowel cancer. I'd noticed blood whilst wiping on the odd occasion which I'd never seen before. My other symptoms were a change in my toilet habits and occasionally I'd get stomach pains. I'm going to sound like a hypocrite here but stay off Google as it sent me doolally! My anxiety was worsened as well by a work colleague who's recently had bowel cancer but has since made a full recovery.

Just because your fit test is high it doesn't mean you have cancer. It could be lots of things. Believe me I was the world's worst at being anxious to the point that it made me I'll. Share your thoughts with family and this forum helped me as well.

I had my colonoscopy today. They were really nice and helpful and made me feel totally at ease. The pre examination drink was fowl but I split my drinks into quarter measures and had one every 15 minutes, then the other 4 a few hours later. Be warned though, don't stray to far from a toilet. My colonoscopy was ok, I had the sedation and barely felt anything. They found I had internal piles,4 polops that they removed and I also have colitis. Apparently the colitis can cause slight bleeding. It's quite enflamed down there which I now have to take suppositories for the next month to hopefully get it back to normal.

Don't be Afraid it could be anything and you really need to have the colonoscopy to give you the all clear and peace of mind.

Good luck and thank you to the good people on here who helped me.

Take care.

Steve.

  • I was wondering how you were doing, thought maybe I’d missed a post. Anyhow really glad to know you’ve had the op and recovering well, now we all have everything crossed for the results. Take care and rest Helen xx

  • I'm so pleased you are feeling OK in yourself. Brilliant news after everything you have been through. I'm.not surprised when will they let you know the surgery worked and they got it all. Hopefully it won't be too much longer for you. No I'm still waiting it's ridiculous I have an appointment with my GP on Thursday to see what they can sort out as the pain has spread and getting worse xx

  • So glad to hear things went well. Stay positive

  • Thanks Sue, I'm resting up and walking.. I spoke to nurse yesterday and she said hopefully only 2 weeks till I find the results..will still be a very long wait xx

  • Hi Amanda, that's such a long wait but hopefully tomorrow you'll get some help as been a long time I think you've been in pain and that's not good to keep living with.. as I mentioned to Sue above the nice nurse I spoke to yesterday said should be 2 weeks time to hear..will be on tenterhooks till I know xx

  • Hiya, how's your husband doing with chemo? I finally got advice yesterday with diet and wound care and so on..I'm down to only paracetamol a couple of times a day and finding it really not too bad at all 9 days on..have been really surprised that it hasn't been anywhere near as painful as a C section when I had my son..

I never got a morphine drip in the end but had liquid morphine for the first 48 hours..

Hope is not too much longer till you can book a lovely holiday somewhere and just relax and enjoy yourselves xx

  • Hi,

I am having colonoscopy tomorrow after some bleeding, constipation and pain. Obviously worried and dreading the prep and possible outcome from the colonoscopy but also just want this ‘not knowing’ part to be over.

I have read through this full thread and just wanted to say thank you to everyone who posted their stories and special thanks to those who unfortunately received bad news but continue to offer words of hope and reassurance to us still going through the first stage.

wishing all the very best to you all x

  • Hi I just wanted to say I'm one of the ones who've been where you are ,all I can say is none of it was as bad as I'd thought up in my head not even the prep ,everyone involved at the Hospital were great and kind ,at the end they were able to put my mind at ease when they said everything looks fine ,its such a relief after weeks of worry ,I hope you find the same ,there could be so many other things that are causing your symptoms and not something sinister .

  • Thanks so much Jenny.
I fell into the trap that so many do of googling symptoms etc and convinced myself that there was no other explanation for symptoms other than a malignant cancer - however I feel a bit better having read this thread today.
I am trying to stay optimistic about tomorrow and just hope I am one of the lucky ones!
Thanks again for taking time to reply x
