Positive fit test and colonoscopy result.

Hi,Id just like to share my experiences that ive been through over the last few weeks for the benefit of people who are going through the same thing.

Im a 50 year old male and I recently had a fit test result of 16. Not massively over but over nonetheless. Immediately I'm thinking the worse and I was convinced I had bowel cancer. I'd noticed blood whilst wiping on the odd occasion which I'd never seen before. My other symptoms were a change in my toilet habits and occasionally I'd get stomach pains. I'm going to sound like a hypocrite here but stay off Google as it sent me doolally! My anxiety was worsened as well by a work colleague who's recently had bowel cancer but has since made a full recovery.

Just because your fit test is high it doesn't mean you have cancer. It could be lots of things. Believe me I was the world's worst at being anxious to the point that it made me I'll. Share your thoughts with family and this forum helped me as well.

I had my colonoscopy today. They were really nice and helpful and made me feel totally at ease. The pre examination drink was fowl but I split my drinks into quarter measures and had one every 15 minutes, then the other 4 a few hours later. Be warned though, don't stray to far from a toilet. My colonoscopy was ok, I had the sedation and barely felt anything. They found I had internal piles,4 polops that they removed and I also have colitis. Apparently the colitis can cause slight bleeding. It's quite enflamed down there which I now have to take suppositories for the next month to hopefully get it back to normal.

Don't be Afraid it could be anything and you really need to have the colonoscopy to give you the all clear and peace of mind.

Good luck and thank you to the good people on here who helped me.

Take care.

Steve.

  • Ah bless you I bet its hard it is the not knowing isn't it that's the hardest thing. I start my restricted diet on Saturday I have tablets and a drink to have which I start taking Saturday. When you have your procedure on Monday do you have to have a sleepover or do you come home afterwards. Fingers crossed they get it all for you I really hope and pray for you xx

  • Yes a big day for us both. But a bigger one for you. Mine is called a CT colongram they are saying now they put a tube up my bottom and then do a CT scan too with a dye of iodine. Sounds lovely lol. They scan all my organs from the top of stomach to the top of my thighs apparently. So a good one but it worries me how he convinced the Radiologist to agree to it with me being too young for this scan xx

  • Sounds lovely! All these are so unknown aren't they but amazing what they can do..hope your restricted diet not too bad...I have got to start in morning..so going to enjoy dinner and some prosecco tonight..do you get any sedation with yours? I didn't with my CT scan as they're not uncomfortable..

I guess as they don't know where your pain coming from this procedure would be a good option..it might well be like me in that they only offered the sigmoidoscopy as they reviewed my results again and a different Consultant said this would be a good thing to try...so the radiologist might well have taken  your case to an MDT meeting and this colonogram was proposed as a good thing to do xx

  • I come home a couple of hours after it...is on my mind a lot now and so so so want it to be possible to remove it Monday xx

  •   Hi everyone. First time posting but have read through this entire thread and just wanted to say to Steve thank you for starting it.  I had a positive FIT test. 20 and some rectal bleeding. I’ve IBS(d) and divertular disease.   I met with my consultant on Tuesday , was very fortunate to get a cancellation and I’m booked in for colonoscopy on Monday 18th at 18:30. I’ve been quite anxious but a good piece of advjce I got from someone was to deal only with facts not thoughts ! Which I’m trying hard to do.

To Sam , Sue and everyone who is anxious and feeling stressed I hope you’re ok.  To everyone who has had good news/ results that’s wonderful and so reassuring.  I’ve made notes of all the tips for the prep. Mine is Moviprep , 1 litre Sunday night ,then second Monday Morning. I will split the dose over the two hours.

I just want again to thank everyone for their posts. Has helped me.

  • Hi Eve, I agree is such a nice and helpful thread..sorry you going through same thing and found it like we all have..good you got a cancellation as not long to wait..I don't know what the Moviprep is like but cant be worse than the Plenvu drink I've got ahain!

I agree facts best to focus on but so hard not to worry..fingers crossed yours relates to IBS etc..do post how you get on x

Hi and welcome Eve but sorry you find your self here, my husband had moviprep, he didn’t find it too bad but split it in 2 like you say also had it in a beker with a lid and straw so he couldn’t smell it. He amazed me really after reading all the stuff about how bad it is. I’m really hoping it all goes well for you. Take care and hugs x

  •   thank you so much. Yes will definitely update. Nothing worse than wondering how someone got on.

Thank you Sue.  Im keeping myself busy  I have been very fortunate at how quickly I’ve been seen  Meant to be January but they rang with a cancellation!   Bought some apple juice to help with the Prep !!!

  • Hi Helen and Amanda, just sending you both good luck for Monday and praying they can remove it all on Monday Helen, what a great Christmas pressie that will be.

Not sure if I said about Mart, he has to have another colonoscopy in 3 years as one polyp was a bit dicey but 3 years is ok when your 80 lol he also has diverticulosis, no pain or anything with that though, also the cyst on the spleen their not sure so has to have another ultrasound in 6 months. Apart from that he’s fine than goodness.

I was brave and got my cataract done, got my new glasses today and have the other eye done in a couple of months.

Anyway I’ll be looking on Monday (even though we’re going to Tenerife) how you both got on. Good luck to you all xx
