Positive fit test and colonoscopy result.

Hi,Id just like to share my experiences that ive been through over the last few weeks for the benefit of people who are going through the same thing.

Im a 50 year old male and I recently had a fit test result of 16. Not massively over but over nonetheless. Immediately I'm thinking the worse and I was convinced I had bowel cancer. I'd noticed blood whilst wiping on the odd occasion which I'd never seen before. My other symptoms were a change in my toilet habits and occasionally I'd get stomach pains. I'm going to sound like a hypocrite here but stay off Google as it sent me doolally! My anxiety was worsened as well by a work colleague who's recently had bowel cancer but has since made a full recovery.

Just because your fit test is high it doesn't mean you have cancer. It could be lots of things. Believe me I was the world's worst at being anxious to the point that it made me I'll. Share your thoughts with family and this forum helped me as well.

I had my colonoscopy today. They were really nice and helpful and made me feel totally at ease. The pre examination drink was fowl but I split my drinks into quarter measures and had one every 15 minutes, then the other 4 a few hours later. Be warned though, don't stray to far from a toilet. My colonoscopy was ok, I had the sedation and barely felt anything. They found I had internal piles,4 polops that they removed and I also have colitis. Apparently the colitis can cause slight bleeding. It's quite enflamed down there which I now have to take suppositories for the next month to hopefully get it back to normal.

Don't be Afraid it could be anything and you really need to have the colonoscopy to give you the all clear and peace of mind.

Good luck and thank you to the good people on here who helped me.

Take care.

Steve.

  • hi MJ, i don't know too much about FIT scores as i never got a score with mine..but all i'd say is that you're really young with no symptoms and your GP doesnt think you've got cancer and so am sure the colonoscopy will reassure you - but the waiting is v agony i do know....x

  • Hello I had a FIT result of 46 and had a colonoscopy and they found nothing ! Some people have results in the hundreds ! Can the doctors do a stool test this week for you ? As the results might be so much different now !

  • I do have stomach pain, but it’s high up and she diagnosed gastritis and gave me lansoprazole.

  • I’ve got the colonoscopy next week so I guess a FIT test would probably not be much quicker.

did you have any other symptoms?

  • I had mucas and bad diarrhoea

  • 2 weeks Amanda, fly back Christmas Day. Just had to change a appointment to see his stomach surgeon as we just got an appointment for the day we fly, couldn’t right it really could you, anyhow changed appointment to November now x

  • I’d add the same as Helen and Lily says, your score isn’t high at all, your young so try not to worry too much about it, get it done just to put your mind at rest.

Helen hope you’re feeling a bit better now you’ve got over the shock, after the MDT meeting phone the nurse up and ask about your CT scan if they haven’t been back to you. Hugs xx

  • Some people get scores of 4 figures and it's not cancer. It could be literally anything. 74 isn't that high at all tbh.

  • Oh lovely to have something booked and to look forward to x

  • Hi Sue..I had a call today and thye have said MDT won't be till at least Wed 1st or Wed 8th as the people doing the report from the CT scan need 2 full weeks to write it..they have a provisional date for me to meet Consultant or Surgeon or Dr (not sure who) on 13th Nov to say what treatment which 'may' be surgery..now that has worried me as what could they mean..I was told they would be cutting it out.. my mind leaping to the fact surgery won't be possible as pointless...I'm jumping a ton of steps ahead of course..I know the NHS doing their best but I don't think they realise a careless word here and there causes huge stress and worry.. x
