Positive fit test and colonoscopy result.

Hi,Id just like to share my experiences that ive been through over the last few weeks for the benefit of people who are going through the same thing.

Im a 50 year old male and I recently had a fit test result of 16. Not massively over but over nonetheless. Immediately I'm thinking the worse and I was convinced I had bowel cancer. I'd noticed blood whilst wiping on the odd occasion which I'd never seen before. My other symptoms were a change in my toilet habits and occasionally I'd get stomach pains. I'm going to sound like a hypocrite here but stay off Google as it sent me doolally! My anxiety was worsened as well by a work colleague who's recently had bowel cancer but has since made a full recovery.

Just because your fit test is high it doesn't mean you have cancer. It could be lots of things. Believe me I was the world's worst at being anxious to the point that it made me I'll. Share your thoughts with family and this forum helped me as well.

I had my colonoscopy today. They were really nice and helpful and made me feel totally at ease. The pre examination drink was fowl but I split my drinks into quarter measures and had one every 15 minutes, then the other 4 a few hours later. Be warned though, don't stray to far from a toilet. My colonoscopy was ok, I had the sedation and barely felt anything. They found I had internal piles,4 polops that they removed and I also have colitis. Apparently the colitis can cause slight bleeding. It's quite enflamed down there which I now have to take suppositories for the next month to hopefully get it back to normal.

Don't be Afraid it could be anything and you really need to have the colonoscopy to give you the all clear and peace of mind.

Good luck and thank you to the good people on here who helped me.

Take care.

Steve.

  • I had mucas and bad diarrhoea

  • I’d add the same as Helen and Lily says, your score isn’t high at all, your young so try not to worry too much about it, get it done just to put your mind at rest.

Helen hope you’re feeling a bit better now you’ve got over the shock, after the MDT meeting phone the nurse up and ask about your CT scan if they haven’t been back to you. Hugs xx

  • Hi Sue..I had a call today and thye have said MDT won't be till at least Wed 1st or Wed 8th as the people doing the report from the CT scan need 2 full weeks to write it..they have a provisional date for me to meet Consultant or Surgeon or Dr (not sure who) on 13th Nov to say what treatment which 'may' be surgery..now that has worried me as what could they mean..I was told they would be cutting it out.. my mind leaping to the fact surgery won't be possible as pointless...I'm jumping a ton of steps ahead of course..I know the NHS doing their best but I don't think they realise a careless word here and there causes huge stress and worry.. x

  • I also have constipation and weight loss with my stomach pain. X

  • Could easily be crohns or celiac disease x

  • They have ruled out celiac the doctors have said I had a test about 2 or 3 weeks ago and they said if my sample picked it up they would let me know. My test came back abnormal for calprotectin x

  • Helen I’ve only just seen this post sorry for the late answer. That seems a long time to wait but remember they know what they’re doing. If they was to cut it out that would be the surgery they referred to. I’ve obviously googled loads as Im sure you have so you’ll know there’s loads they can do. It’s still a big worry though, don’t over think things they say bowel cancer is a slow growing cancer IF that’s what you have and you still don’t know do you just that it did look right. Sending hugs xxx

  • hiya, i rang the hospital up this morning and they've said the doctor's strike is meaning they have a little backlog but she did say that all being well they'll be able to ring me week beg 6th Nov - she did explain (which i'd not heard before) that options the MDT will discuss are whether better to take out via another colonoscopy and then keep me under surveillance or to go for an operation. I also asked about the CT scan and if it had found anything else would I not hear till week of the 6th and she said no, if it has shown anything else up they would phone i think later this week...i do have malignant cells in the polyp though which she again confirmed xx

  • That’s sounding so positive Helen, let’s hope they can just take it off without anything else. It sounds as though they’re not too worried about it so don’t you be. Also good news that you don’t have to wait very long for the results of the CT scan.
This writing is so small, I’m having a cataract done a week on Sat, it may help me not make so many mistakes lol, I won’t say I’m scarred just   pooing my self, which is good for this forum xx
