Positive fit test and colonoscopy result.

Hi,Id just like to share my experiences that ive been through over the last few weeks for the benefit of people who are going through the same thing.

Im a 50 year old male and I recently had a fit test result of 16. Not massively over but over nonetheless. Immediately I'm thinking the worse and I was convinced I had bowel cancer. I'd noticed blood whilst wiping on the odd occasion which I'd never seen before. My other symptoms were a change in my toilet habits and occasionally I'd get stomach pains. I'm going to sound like a hypocrite here but stay off Google as it sent me doolally! My anxiety was worsened as well by a work colleague who's recently had bowel cancer but has since made a full recovery.

Just because your fit test is high it doesn't mean you have cancer. It could be lots of things. Believe me I was the world's worst at being anxious to the point that it made me I'll. Share your thoughts with family and this forum helped me as well.

I had my colonoscopy today. They were really nice and helpful and made me feel totally at ease. The pre examination drink was fowl but I split my drinks into quarter measures and had one every 15 minutes, then the other 4 a few hours later. Be warned though, don't stray to far from a toilet. My colonoscopy was ok, I had the sedation and barely felt anything. They found I had internal piles,4 polops that they removed and I also have colitis. Apparently the colitis can cause slight bleeding. It's quite enflamed down there which I now have to take suppositories for the next month to hopefully get it back to normal.

Don't be Afraid it could be anything and you really need to have the colonoscopy to give you the all clear and peace of mind.

Good luck and thank you to the good people on here who helped me.

Take care.

Steve.

  • OK at least you have a date for your scan now and then you will know what is going on inside you. Then you can ask questions. Sounds like going privately might not be any quicker them. I suppose November is only next month if you think of it like that. Bless you x

  • How has your husband got on with drinking the stuff x

  • Yes it was..I must not do again..how is your husband getting on with the drinks this morning? Xx

  • Yes it has you're right.. and this has really had a huge impact on me as so totally unexpected...and I'm finding it all so scary tbh

  • Yes exactly re wanting it just done and sorted..its the waiting and uncertainty that is so hard mentally..I think yesterday having spoken to the colorectal nurse who said about the CT scan finding out the Stage of it did set me off on a whole chain of worrying..

  • Hiya..yes I guess it is only next month and only 6 weeks or so..it will be approx 2 weeks today I'll hear anything about the scan..but I tbink that will be giving me an appointment to see surgeon who I guess then tells me what was found and how they are going to treat me x

  • It is so hard for you and will seem like such a long time for you. I suppose once you know more then you can call other places to see if you can get it done quicker when you know more information can't you. X

  • He doesn’t start it till 5.pm the nurse said yesterday that he could do it a bit earlier to give him more time so like 4pm. He has a morning appointment 9.45 so will have to get up early to drink the stuff and 3/4 drive. He’s just so positive and says it’ll be ok he’ll manage it. He’s not having sedation as I can’t drive but I’ve told him if he needs it to have it, we’ll get home somehow.

Thanks Helen and Amanda for asking and I hope you’re feeling a bit better today Helen xx

  • Hope all going OK so far Sue...thinking of you and your husband and hope he is doing OK.

I have had an hour with a good friend of mine who is a mental health nurse and she's taken me through 2 different calming techniques to help calm the panicky thoughts..she is going to do a session every week with me so I'm very fortunate to have that clinical support.

Your husband can have gas and air I believe even if he is driving and that I think would be helpful.. even tho I was sedated I honestly did not feel one second of any pain..it just felt like someone rummaging around in there..not even when they cut out the very small polyp or took the biopsies.. xx

  • That’s lovely about your friend helping you through it Helen. I paid for someone when I was going through bladder cancer and stop smoking at the same time,  I hope you feeling a lot better now Helen x

Mart started his moviprep just after 3.30 finished the first 1ltr  at 5.30 now waiting for it to work. He said it was ok but towards the end was getting a bit much, got there though and to do it all again 4am oh the joys.
Im dreading getting the results though..xxx
