Positive fit test and colonoscopy result.

Hi,Id just like to share my experiences that ive been through over the last few weeks for the benefit of people who are going through the same thing.

Im a 50 year old male and I recently had a fit test result of 16. Not massively over but over nonetheless. Immediately I'm thinking the worse and I was convinced I had bowel cancer. I'd noticed blood whilst wiping on the odd occasion which I'd never seen before. My other symptoms were a change in my toilet habits and occasionally I'd get stomach pains. I'm going to sound like a hypocrite here but stay off Google as it sent me doolally! My anxiety was worsened as well by a work colleague who's recently had bowel cancer but has since made a full recovery.

Just because your fit test is high it doesn't mean you have cancer. It could be lots of things. Believe me I was the world's worst at being anxious to the point that it made me I'll. Share your thoughts with family and this forum helped me as well.

I had my colonoscopy today. They were really nice and helpful and made me feel totally at ease. The pre examination drink was fowl but I split my drinks into quarter measures and had one every 15 minutes, then the other 4 a few hours later. Be warned though, don't stray to far from a toilet. My colonoscopy was ok, I had the sedation and barely felt anything. They found I had internal piles,4 polops that they removed and I also have colitis. Apparently the colitis can cause slight bleeding. It's quite enflamed down there which I now have to take suppositories for the next month to hopefully get it back to normal.

Don't be Afraid it could be anything and you really need to have the colonoscopy to give you the all clear and peace of mind.

Good luck and thank you to the good people on here who helped me.

Take care.

Steve.

  • Hi hope you don't mind me jumping on your post. I've just seen your post Steve. I'm 50 and I've been having abdominal pains now for 8 weeks. I've also had weight loss, tiredness and my bowel habits have changed. I've just had a FIT test and that has come back abnormal. So I've been told I need a colonoscopy for suspected cancer. I've read this post and it has given me some relief but I am worried as you can imagine.

  • I know exactly how you feel as does everyone else on here. You just need to remember that there's multiple things it could be. Using Google can be worse as well as it makes you more paranoid! I was the world's worst for it and it drove me round the twist.

9 out 10 people get the all clear so that's something you need to remember as well.

  • Helen, hubby has 3 cancers I have one (bladder cancer) we’re still here and plodding on, hoping for a holiday sometime, don’t let google scare you too much, most of it is out of date, take the good bits and discard the bad. I have everything crossed for you lovely lady x

  • Sue you got such a lot going on but as you say you still keeping on..hope you do get a holiday soon...I've steered clear of gossip sites and looked at research..noticed today the report from colonoscopy states sp which is serrated polyp so been looking this up..does indicate pre cancerous but also talks about inflamed and pit pattern so bloody confusing as all are separate things.. makes me think they don't really know what I've got..which they sort of said to me..hopefully might hear tomorrow....x

  • Yes it is. You have questions so it's easy to ask Google. Then you just keep going looking into it.

  • I bet it has when are you going to hear it should be any day now isn't it x

  • Ah Sue I'm sorry about both you and your husband. Hope you get your holiday soon. You both deserve a little break x

  • Hello...I've had call from hospital and bad news. They have found cancer in the biopsies..CT scan on Sunday. They will book an appointment I think week after next to tell me what they are going to do..and options..I assume surgery options. Seeing GP later today as I'm all over the place..they don't know if just in polyp as they only took biopsies from it..I am so shocked as I feel perfectly healthy and have no signs of anything other than once or twice having blood x

  • Hi Helen,

Really sorry to hear that. Hopefully it's been caught early.

  • Oh crikey. I'm sorry about your bad news. You must be all over the place.

I'll say this though, without trawling back through the thread I'm sure I put on here that a work colleague of mine had bowel cancer earlier in the year. He had 3 polyps removed and unfortunately one was cancerous. To cut a long story short he had surgery and he's now all clear,no chemotherapy or anything. He was off work for about 3 months from start to finish.

I know it's easier to say this as its not me but it can be sorted,he's proof that it can. I really hope you get better soon.

  • I’m so very sorry Helen it’s something we just don’t want to hear isn’t it, I’ve no words of comfort as I know nothing about bowel cancer but Steve’s post gives us all hope about his friend. There seems so much they can do and so many options, I think that’s one of the problems so much to learn. You say you had no symptoms apart from the high FIT,  that’s the same as Martin only found low iron on a blood test. Helen do keep posting I’m sure it helps. Have you thought about joining Bowel Cancer support on face book, I joined just to try and learn something about it,. Sending you a big HUG Helen and please stay with us all x

  • I feel so sorry for as she was terrified when she joined the thread and that was before this bad news.
