Positive fit test and colonoscopy result.

Hi,Id just like to share my experiences that ive been through over the last few weeks for the benefit of people who are going through the same thing.

Im a 50 year old male and I recently had a fit test result of 16. Not massively over but over nonetheless. Immediately I'm thinking the worse and I was convinced I had bowel cancer. I'd noticed blood whilst wiping on the odd occasion which I'd never seen before. My other symptoms were a change in my toilet habits and occasionally I'd get stomach pains. I'm going to sound like a hypocrite here but stay off Google as it sent me doolally! My anxiety was worsened as well by a work colleague who's recently had bowel cancer but has since made a full recovery.

Just because your fit test is high it doesn't mean you have cancer. It could be lots of things. Believe me I was the world's worst at being anxious to the point that it made me I'll. Share your thoughts with family and this forum helped me as well.

I had my colonoscopy today. They were really nice and helpful and made me feel totally at ease. The pre examination drink was fowl but I split my drinks into quarter measures and had one every 15 minutes, then the other 4 a few hours later. Be warned though, don't stray to far from a toilet. My colonoscopy was ok, I had the sedation and barely felt anything. They found I had internal piles,4 polops that they removed and I also have colitis. Apparently the colitis can cause slight bleeding. It's quite enflamed down there which I now have to take suppositories for the next month to hopefully get it back to normal.

Don't be Afraid it could be anything and you really need to have the colonoscopy to give you the all clear and peace of mind.

Good luck and thank you to the good people on here who helped me.

Take care.

Steve.

  • I feel for you Helen, I’ve also been googling, I’m not sure we should do that though but how else do you understand all the terminology they use, do you know what part of the bowel it’s in xx

  • Its in the left hand sigmoid part which I've been googling and seems not as bad or risky as right hand side..but it is 1.5cm which is not small altho over 2cm more of an issue I think..says right hand side ones less likely to show symptoms or have good outcome..so many confusing terms though..thinking worst and worrying even more than before...xx

  • Its probably the hardest thing to do waiting for results of biopsies and scans ,while you're waiting hang onto the thought that you don't know yet ,the thing that they get results from are the biopsies ,obviously prepare yourself but at this point nothing is certain and like I said if it turns out to be then you will get the best treatment plan and you'll get through it one day at a time ,keep chatting away on here with people who really care x

  • Yes you're right it's more waiting and more worrying and thinking the worst..my mind is going to worst scenario constantly..I think I might see if I can see my gp in a few days...everyone on here so lovely and supportive x

  • Yes it's in the left hand side about 30cm inside..from reading it seems this is better than being in the right side xx

  • Just read through your update, I’m sorry you’ve not had good news, I agree with you in it doesn’t sound good but I definitely think you should call your doctor and ask them to explain things abit more simple for you so you can either stop worrying or you can atleast know your options if it does turn out to be cancerous.I hope you have a lot of support at home at this moment in time I think they have a number on this website you can actually speak to a nurse about your concerns.Good luck and try to stay positive.xx

  • Helen have you thought about phoning Macmillan up and talking to them, I’ve done that on a few occasions. 0808 808 0000. My husband has 4 polyps, found out  2 left and  2 right side, not sure where the flat one is. I think I may phone Macmillan up later today, It’s so scary and not much info is been offered, just waiting for a nurse to phone up……Keep in touch Helen xx

  • I said this before that we have a wonderful NHS service but it's things like this that need improving imo. Leaving people in limbo isn't good.

  • That's a good idea Sue I hadn't thought of doin that.. I hope you get a call from the nurse..given they told me straight away their concerns then id hope they would have let you know already there was a worry with ant of his..do let me know what macmillan say xx

  • Yes it is the waiting and worrying that is hard..they said 5 to 7 days before biopsy result..they will phone me with that and I had blood taken..not sure why or what they'd test from that
