Positive fit test and colonoscopy result.

Hi,Id just like to share my experiences that ive been through over the last few weeks for the benefit of people who are going through the same thing.

Im a 50 year old male and I recently had a fit test result of 16. Not massively over but over nonetheless. Immediately I'm thinking the worse and I was convinced I had bowel cancer. I'd noticed blood whilst wiping on the odd occasion which I'd never seen before. My other symptoms were a change in my toilet habits and occasionally I'd get stomach pains. I'm going to sound like a hypocrite here but stay off Google as it sent me doolally! My anxiety was worsened as well by a work colleague who's recently had bowel cancer but has since made a full recovery.

Just because your fit test is high it doesn't mean you have cancer. It could be lots of things. Believe me I was the world's worst at being anxious to the point that it made me I'll. Share your thoughts with family and this forum helped me as well.

I had my colonoscopy today. They were really nice and helpful and made me feel totally at ease. The pre examination drink was fowl but I split my drinks into quarter measures and had one every 15 minutes, then the other 4 a few hours later. Be warned though, don't stray to far from a toilet. My colonoscopy was ok, I had the sedation and barely felt anything. They found I had internal piles,4 polops that they removed and I also have colitis. Apparently the colitis can cause slight bleeding. It's quite enflamed down there which I now have to take suppositories for the next month to hopefully get it back to normal.

Don't be Afraid it could be anything and you really need to have the colonoscopy to give you the all clear and peace of mind.

Good luck and thank you to the good people on here who helped me.

Take care.

Steve.

  • Hi Sue..not good news..procedure was fine and not painful but a 1.5cm polyp found with features consistent of a possible malignancy. CT scan booked..bloods taken.biopsies taken. Will have to be removed either by another colonoscopy or if malignant by surgery.plus checking nodes and so on..I am so scared as hoped was just a small polyp..I have a small one too they did remove..x

  • Oh Helen I’m so sorry, I too was hoping it would just be a polyp they could just remove. Let’s just hope it’s not cancerous as they haven’t said it is have they so there’s still hope. I’m keeping everything crossed for you Helen, I’m going to say try not to worry but know you will. My husband apparently has 4 polyps and a small flat one … still waiting for something to happen. Keep in touch with us won’t you. Good luck xx

  • Oh Helen I'm so sorry for your bad news, hopefully it comes back all clear, I have my fingers crossed for u and big hugs x

  • Thanks my lovely..know you got your own stuff going on too..suppose this is why they do screening but shell-shocked this was discovered.. they have given me the photos and does not look nice..I just have to hope if malignant then caught early but has rocked my world xx

  • Thank u Sue..bless yoi with all you got going on..I know they not said but thinking the worst..of course..the size of the polyp is worrying..and of course I'm now stressing what CT scan will find...what an awful time xx

  • Helen it could be nothing yet but at least you got a heads up and even if it is something treatment is the best its ever been and you didn't ignore it which might have been worse ,so I sure hope all goes well for you x

  • Thank you so much Jenny..been trying to Google all the terms in the colonoscopy report and hard to work out..just now feels like yet more worrying and not knowing.. at least I won't fear a colonoscopy as it was fine to have done..but how I wish nothing was found x

  • I feel for you Helen, I’ve also been googling, I’m not sure we should do that though but how else do you understand all the terminology they use, do you know what part of the bowel it’s in xx

  • Its in the left hand sigmoid part which I've been googling and seems not as bad or risky as right hand side..but it is 1.5cm which is not small altho over 2cm more of an issue I think..says right hand side ones less likely to show symptoms or have good outcome..so many confusing terms though..thinking worst and worrying even more than before...xx

  • Yor welcome, if it is the CT scan will say how far it is, if they don't see anything on scan then they caught it really early, that's what they told me, and I have got my breast clinic appointment now it's the 23rd October so will keep you up dated with that, but take it easy xx

  • Its probably the hardest thing to do waiting for results of biopsies and scans ,while you're waiting hang onto the thought that you don't know yet ,the thing that they get results from are the biopsies ,obviously prepare yourself but at this point nothing is certain and like I said if it turns out to be then you will get the best treatment plan and you'll get through it one day at a time ,keep chatting away on here with people who really care x
