Positive fit test and colonoscopy result.

Hi,Id just like to share my experiences that ive been through over the last few weeks for the benefit of people who are going through the same thing.

Im a 50 year old male and I recently had a fit test result of 16. Not massively over but over nonetheless. Immediately I'm thinking the worse and I was convinced I had bowel cancer. I'd noticed blood whilst wiping on the odd occasion which I'd never seen before. My other symptoms were a change in my toilet habits and occasionally I'd get stomach pains. I'm going to sound like a hypocrite here but stay off Google as it sent me doolally! My anxiety was worsened as well by a work colleague who's recently had bowel cancer but has since made a full recovery.

Just because your fit test is high it doesn't mean you have cancer. It could be lots of things. Believe me I was the world's worst at being anxious to the point that it made me I'll. Share your thoughts with family and this forum helped me as well.

I had my colonoscopy today. They were really nice and helpful and made me feel totally at ease. The pre examination drink was fowl but I split my drinks into quarter measures and had one every 15 minutes, then the other 4 a few hours later. Be warned though, don't stray to far from a toilet. My colonoscopy was ok, I had the sedation and barely felt anything. They found I had internal piles,4 polops that they removed and I also have colitis. Apparently the colitis can cause slight bleeding. It's quite enflamed down there which I now have to take suppositories for the next month to hopefully get it back to normal.

Don't be Afraid it could be anything and you really need to have the colonoscopy to give you the all clear and peace of mind.

Good luck and thank you to the good people on here who helped me.

Take care.

Steve.

  • Hi sue, the letter I had says it's carried out by a nursing practitioner over the phone to ask you questions I think relating to suitability for a colonoscopy, for me to ask questions and I think they ask questions about lifestyle and health and then they explain what happens at a colonoscopy...so I'm guessing that this wouldn't be the same for your husband perhaps? Thank you..getting more worried by the day xx

  • Ahh yes, he saw the surgeon for some reason, maybe as the doctor had done the FIT test, I remember you saying now lol. I just want some results, everything seems to take ages considering this started early July under the 2 week wait and here we are in September. At least when you have your colonoscopy you should find out the same day if they see anything, maybe not what it is but you’ll have an idea. My husband doesn’t worry, I think I worry for us both .Fingers crossed for you and us.
Hi Steve, I hope things are going good for you now, get another holiday booked X

  • My score for my Fit test is 400 with symptoms of bleeding on tissue for 5 weeks, lower abdominal pains, blood in stools and exhaustion all the time just wanna sleep during day and no energy to do anything anymore, got my phone assessment tomorrow morning, am really scared as only 38

  • Oh Sam..I do hope you get some reassurance from your phone screening.. especially as you so young.. dont know how you got the score as my GP says they didn't get any scoring..I guess visible blood is maybe not as worrying as occult as could easily be hemorrhoids..and tiredness could be all sorts of things..let me know how you get on x

  • That's such a long time to wait and worry..and is good your husband doesn't worry...only thing I suppose if taking so long might not be anything they are that worried about...all my fingers crossed for you x

  • I found it on my NHS app under test results, and thank you i will let you know how it goes tomorrow its first thing at 8.30, I'm just worried sick don't think I will be able to sleep tonight either x

  • My app shows nothing and when I rang GP all they said was that it was a positive result and they didn't have a score..my appt 9am Friday for phone assessment..do let me know how it goes...am relying on sleeping pills I had for another reason a year ago but otherwise I'd be same..I know leaflet I was sent said 91 per cent of positive results are nothing serious but like you all I can do is worry incessantly!!! Let me know please how you get on and ill keep all my fingers crossed all is OK x

  • I will keep you to date tomorrow with what they say to me, I haven't had anything in post about it all when GP phoned me to tell me she said for me to book in an appointment with her once I have had my phone assessment so we can talk about everything which didn't sound positive either x

  • So just had my phone assessment, I have got to have a Colonoscopy and CT scan within 2 weeks x

  • Hi Sam, good that you've had that appointment and that will be done in 2 weeks time..think that is standard time so not like they're rushing you in any earlier..expect your gp just wants to check how you are after the screening appointment..hard to not worry isn't it...but hopefully a chat with GP will be helpful x
