13 year old possible lymphoma

Hi,  about 3 months ago I noticed 2 lumps on the side of my 13 year old sons neck,  bloods were taken and all clear, doctor wasn't concerned so left it at that.

Fast forward 2 months later and I found 3 more lumps, one on the same side and 2 on the other.  Back to doctor, bloods repeated and again normal.

After many phone calls and pushing, took him back again this morning and different doctor was much more concerned, also noting one large swollen tonsil.  I'm guilty of googling and know this is a bad sign.  2 week rapid referral made to paeds for further investigation.

Doctor said the lymphnodes don't feel like typical hard cancer lumps but there's no way of knowing without further testing.  My son feels fine in himself, no night sweats or weightloss etc.

I'm.trying to stay positive but months of swollen lymphnodes and one enlarged tonsil is really really worrying me. I can't think about anything else.

Has anyone else had these symptoms and it been ok?   Everything I read says these symptoms combined usually a red.flag for cancer and I'm terrified!

  • Hello Vix1705

I'm sorry to hear that your son has had some ongoing health concerns over the past few months. It's understandable that you're feeling anxious.

It's good to hear that the blood test results he's had haven't given any immediate cause for concern but it's sensible that the GP has now referred him for some further investigations. Hopefully the paediatric team will be able to give you some reassurance when you see them.

We know that waiting for appointments can be a worrying time and many people turn to the internet. Unfortunately what happens is that most often they are left feeling even more worried. I wonder if you might find it helpful to chat things through with one of our nurses ahead of your son's appointment. I'm sure they will be happy to offer any advice, information and support they can. If you'd like to talk with them they're available Monday to Friday 9am to 5pm on 0808 800 4040.

Do keep in touch and let us know how you get on.

    Best wishes,

  • Thankyou so much for your reply, I can honestly say that I have never felt this much worry in my whole life,  I go from thinking as positively as possible to completely breaking down and thinking the worst.

  • Is there anyone who has had one enlarged tonsil alongside swollen lymphnodes and it been ok?  Everywhere I look says these symptoms combined leads to malignancy just want to hear or see something reassuring but there really isn't anything anywhere, I'm terrified and really think my child is so likely to have cancer. Anyone?

  • Initial paediatric appointment on weds, anyone know what to expect?   Relieved appointment has come quickly but so anxious!

  • Hiya! I actually had my tonsils removed a few years ago, at the age of 25 as I would keep getting swollen tonsils and nodes. My lymph nodes have always been so palpable (they actually started my health anxiety about 10 years ago when I felt one and thought it was a tumour!)

anywho, when I had my tonsils out, I was so worried as they said they would run histology on them as my left was almost double the size of the right. Anyway, was completely benign

I believe blood tests would highlight likely lymphoma etc, at least that’s what I was always told so I’m sure he will be fine :) x

  • Thankyou so much for your reply,  that is really reassuring,  google had convinced me that cancer was the only possible cause of these symptoms, really appreciate your story x

  • Yeah, don't use google. You're more or less searching out a cancer diagnosis unwittingly. It's what Google does. Google can not, and will not tell you what your kid hasn't got. Cancer generates the most traffic, and because google is ad driven, BOOM, you and everyone you know now has cancer regardless of symptoms.

I'm 48, and used to get a lot of throat issues as a teen. to this day, i still have 3 nodes that are enlarged. 1 of those nodes always causes concern with doctors who i haven't seen in the past. But it's been there since i was 16 and hasn't changed. It's very, very common that node that enlarge, to remain enlarged for life. A lot never return to their previous state. Seriously, if you're gonna google something, google that. It is very common. Your son's nodes may never return to their pre infection state. But he's gonna be seen, which is good, and you'll be able to get on with your life, so I wouldn't be overly worried. He has age on his side when enlarged nodes are even more common.

  • Thank you for your reply, and yes I definitely have learnt the hard way when it comes to Google.  Paediatric appointment is tomorrow so we will see what happens.  I'm feeling a little less worried but still can't shake the feeling that something might be very wrong because of the one swollen  tonsil as well as the nodes.  Fingers crossed for tomorrow morning x

  • Update after paeds appointment...

Doctor was very reassuring that she doesn't believe its lymohoma,  she examined him and said there were no red flags and in lymphoma with children he would have shown some.red flags by now.  She is still.refering him to ENT about the tonsil and for a ultrasound ans chest xray (but I think this was to reassure us rather than real concern)

I still.have some niggling anxiety because there's no real answers to what could be causing his symptoms, especially the tonsil but hopefully that will be resolved with ENT.  So still concerned but feeling reassured.

  • Hiya, very pleased to hear it. It's your child, so it's more than understandable you still have niggles and anxiety surrounding their health. Our daughter has a severe nut allergy, and we worry about her all the time, even when she's fine, and been sensible looking after her dietary needs outside the home. But yeah, we still worry. You'll worry too until the next set of tests.

As i said in my previous post, when lymph nodes enlarge, they can remain enlarged for life. Between the ages of 12-19 my tonsils were always large. I was a foot up the backside away from having them removed when they suddenly decided to get better and never had a sore throat for decades. Some of us are just very unlucky with sore throats as young 'uns.
