Complex ovarian cyst gynecology referal

Hi everyone,

After having extremely heavy bleeding and large clotting for the past year I decided enough was enough when severe pain started too.

My white blood count was high but nothing to be concerned over and my c125 was 12 so that's a good low number.

However I was sent for an external and tv ultrasound and today I got the results.

Complex ovarian cyst on left ovary with septation and irregular borders plus some solid areas.

This cyst has been with me for years the last scan was 6 years ago and it has grown. I'm now being referred to gynecology. Cancer was mentioned alot but it was down played. Has anyone had a cyst like this and it turned out to be nothing to worry about? I know it will need to be taken out as it's causing alot of problems.

  • Hi

My journey started approx 5 weeks ago. Irregular bleeding trip to Dr who referred for USS and CA125. My USS confirmed a 6cm complex ovarian cyst with some irregularity and some solid component within. Unfortunately my CA125 came back high (141) so I was put on 2ww to gynae.

Saw gynae who done a uterine scrape biopsy and a CA19-9, still awaiting for results. I also have a hysteroscopy booked I'm tomorrow and a CT scan ordered - waiting for app day/time.

I'm not yet at the point of nothing to worry about as my investigations are still ongoing but mine will be removed regardless of what the results show, the consultant has said they are just getting a full picture to decide how to proceed with removal.

Cancer has been mentioned but I feel like you, down played. They seem to be doing a lot of testing but very little communication.

I hope yours is OK, I'm very scared now with everything but I will deal with whatever the outcome of all these tests and I will cope.

  • Hi both Stockley960 and Indi42,

Sorry to hear about you both going through worrying times. I hope you are both doing okay now.

I recognise that your posts were a while ago, however I am currently in the process of going through something very similar. I had a USS/internal and they found a complex cyst with vascular septations and vascular solid component. I’m waiting on a ca125 which I should get tomorrow, but understand this is not always an accurate indicator.

I was wondering if it would be possible to ask what outcomes/conclusions were drawn following your scans etc please?
And do you have any advice for what to ask at the 2ww gynae appointment please?

    thank you

  • Hi, how are you all? I just read your stories and hope you are all well! I can't see any new/updated posts. The last one is from few months ago.

I came across this forum while I was researching more information about my own recent scan result: "High in the left adnexa there is a 40 x 37mm complex mixed echo cyst.
No increase in vascularity seen." I had Ca125 done four weeks ago and result was 19. I'm currently waiting for the hospital to contact me regarding the urgent referral for suspected gynaecological cancer from my GP and I'm extremely worried. I'm trying to stay of google but it's hard not to read....

  • Hi jkg21, sorry to hear that you’re going through this - it can be so worrying and the wait is always horrible!
My CA125 was 9, and my understanding is that anything below 35 is generally a more reassuring sign? I was then sent for an MRI and my results of this showed that it was that it may have been a hemmorhagic cyst and therefore benign :) I still have a little bit of worry as the prev consultant had said they can’t be 100% sure what it is definitely benign unless it’s removed… but just trying to trust the doctors/mri results that everything is ok.
Sending you lots of luck and well wishes x

  • Hi I'm Sam. I've also recently been told that I have a complex cyst on 23rd July - my ultrasound was on the 22nd July, (measurring approx. 4cm with a 2cm vascularised solid component), and was referred to gynaecology within 2 weeks. They're arranging an MRI, but I haven't been told anything else or when. I'm perimenopausal and my CA125 result came back within range (14), but still worried sick. I was just wondering how you are and whether you can share any news please? Many thanks x

  • Hi, I'm sorry to hear that but please stay positive!

As far as I'm aware the 2 week referral rule doesn't exist anymore. I was told by nhs staff that it was swapped by 28days rule where they must see you, do the tests they need (cancer markers, mri etc whatever they think it's appropriate), confirm wether its cancer or not and discuss the treatment with you.

I had cea, another ca125 and few other blood tests. All within the range and MRI confirmed that I have endometriosis.

I've been referred for hysterectomy and I'm currently waiting to hear when. As its not cancerous (thankfully!) I'm not on fast track anymore and I've been placed on upto 6months long waiting list.

Please stay positive, I know it's easier said then done but your ca125 is within the range so it shouldn't be cancerous. I had my mri done very quickly (gynae app was on Monday and I had mri on Wednesday same week) so hopefully you won't wait too long too! Sending lots of luck and best wishes your way x

  • Thank you so much for your reassuring message. I'm so relieved to hear that yours was found to be benign. You almost don't mind being on a waiting list when you know that you're going to be ok. I re ly hope that your surgery goes well and you recover quickly. Sending you all the best xx
