How long did people wait for first appointment?

My doctor made an urgent referral to the cancer fast track clinic last week (breast), and I was told to follow up if I hadn't heard from them within five working days. I've just spoken to them and have been told I probably won't get a phone call now until the end of next week, and the appointment will be two weeks after that! I'm going out of my mind with worry, even though I'm trying my best not to.

How did people get through the initial waiting for an appointment? I'm a wreak already!

  • Thank you Jolamine, hadn't thought of that, just assumed you would be told on the day. Xxx

    Hi Mex,

I just thought that I'd mention this, as I expected them straight away too - daft really, when you think about it. The results of any scans or biopsies carried out, will be discussed at one of your your consultant's regular MDT (multi-disciplinary team) meetings, before you are told what they are. This allows all the professionals who might be involved in your care to decide on the best way forward for you. By the time you get your results, the consultant usually has a treatment plan in place, should you need one.

    Kind regards,

    Jolamine xx

  • Hi, I'm so shocked everyone has waited so long. I feel blessed that I had an appointment within 3 working days of finding a lump in my breast. That appointment was 4 weeks and one day ago. On Monday I have a pre-op and the following Monday I go in for a lumpectomy.

  • I hope you were able to get through yesterday, Mex xxx

  • Thank you so much for replying, Jolamine.

I am trying not to Google although it's hard not to. However,  I did access my NHS medical file via the app and was very alarmed to read the doctor had ticked the box ' I think it is likely this patient has cancer' under Level of Concern. Hoping this is just to get my referral through, as she didn't tell me that when I saw her

I've got a load of blood tests on Monday, so know once that's done, it's only another week to wait until my appointment.

    Hi LizLo,

All of us who are referred to the breast clinic are sent there to check for cancer. However, only 2 people out of every 10 who attend, will get a cancer diagnosis. I have had 2 bouts of breast cancer myself. That was 13 years ago and I still lead a busy and fulfilling life. I know that it's hard not to Google, but this is never a good idea.

    Kind regards,

  • Hi Lizlo

I went on the Tuesday and was seen by the following Thursday but my dr surgery did call me on the same afternoon after my consultation and booked it all in for me.

is it worth maybe seeing if the surgery could do this for you?

I can only say to you try not to worry but I know it's impossible!

just wanted to let you know it's a very organised process once you get to the clinic and they will try to let you know asap what their conclusion is. They let me know during the ultrasound and the consultant I saw was lovely.

You have to keep in your head this is to rule out worse case scenarios not definitely conform the worst.  They have so many leaflets when you get there for so many outcomes of what it could be and I saw so many ladies leave with various leaflets that were not bad outcomes so keep thinking positive

keeping my fingers crossed for you

  • Hi

I was also sent straight for all the blood tests an hour after seeing my dr and had a positive outcome so please don't think this is anything bad

it is just a precaution to rule out anything else causing your symptoms

  • Hi,

I had my appointment today and they found lots of cysts. They have drained the 2 biggest ones and just told me to go back to GPS if pain comes back. As soon they drained one of them the pain under my arm went so that's good! I'm a bit sore and bruised now but all good.

Hope everyone's appointments go well. Sending lots of love

  • HI Mex,

This is the best news that you could hope for. I'm so glad that you got instantaneous relief ,once the biggest cysts were drained. The soreness and bruising should settle down quite quickly.

    I'm delighted for you.

    Kind regards,
