How long did people wait for first appointment?

My doctor made an urgent referral to the cancer fast track clinic last week (breast), and I was told to follow up if I hadn't heard from them within five working days. I've just spoken to them and have been told I probably won't get a phone call now until the end of next week, and the appointment will be two weeks after that! I'm going out of my mind with worry, even though I'm trying my best not to.

How did people get through the initial waiting for an appointment? I'm a wreak already!

I think normal wait time is 2 weeks

I went private was seen next day couldn't wait the two weeks was in a right state but this is not possible for everyone I no I was lucky I didn't pay it's through my work insurance

for me it was bad news but hopefully you will get a good outcome

    good luck love Lara ️

  • I had to wait a week to see my GP who referred me on Friday. I got a letter telling me if I hadn't heard by 8th to call them.

I called today and was told my clinic is behind so its going to be 3 weeks. A bit of a don't call us we'll call you too. I aren't hopeful and am expecting it to be longer!

  • Hi,

The wait is absolutely the worst and you will have days where you sit and torture yourself and then have days where you have to just keep yourself busy.
I didn't hear anything for about 5 days and so phoned, they gave me an appointment which was 2 weeks after the referral. My referral was on the nhs app and when I looked it gave me the option to change appointment to one a few days sooner which I did and then panicked I shouldn't have done that so I phoned and she said oh no please don't change your appointments on the app as the appointments are done in order so I basically jumped the queue but seeing as I had already done it she let me keep it!

Wishing you all the best xx

  • 3 weeks, this was Feb-Mar this year.
Like you I heard nothing and rang to chase when I started to wonder if they even knew about me.

The waiting is horrid. Sending love x

  • Hi,

I had docs on 28th April, had referral on app by time I got home but it wouldnt let me make app, so rang the weds after first bank holiday and they said they had referral and with bank holiday would be Friday when they rang. Nothing on Friday so rang back they said they would ring Tues. They said they usually ring and appointment will be within 2 -3 days. I haven't heard today and couldn't get through when I rang them so just hoping they ring tomorrow. I have some days where I don't even think about it, but then tonight I've only just sat down as needed to be busy.

Hope you get your appointment soon.

  • Hi Lara,

Thank you so much for replying. I'm so sorry to hear you didn't have good news.

I am thinking about possibly going private - going to have a chat with the doctor about it tomorrow.

Hope it all goes well with your treatment.

  • Yes, our clinic is behind too. I hope your appointment comes through soon

  • Thank you for replying.

Looking on here, it sounds like waiting is the norm. I'm just going to have to keep myself super busy, I think!

  • Thank you for taking the time to reply.

I'm going to try and keep myself so busy I won't have time to dwell too much. It's hard not to fret though, isn't it?

I hope you manage to get through tomorrow, and you get an appointment soon.
