Would chest CT detect Breast lump?

Hi, I'm new here.

I had lots of different symptoms since October last year including nausea, weight loss, loss of appetite etc. Just felt dreadful most days.

I was sent for gastroscopy and CT (neck to groin) which only showed a small Hiatal hernia.

My nausea has improved but I continue to lose weight even though I am eating more now.

Anyway, I decided to check my breast the other day as I have really done it before and I should have.

I've been having some new pain before periods which prompted me.

I thought I felt a lump and saw that I have a very visable odd looking vein run through it.

I'm 42 so nearing menopause I guess as well.

I felt a bit stupid going to go after all the tests I've had but thought I'd better check it.

Dr asked me where I thought I felt it and agreed she could feel something maybe. Reassured me that it was probably nothing to worry about but sending me off to the breast clinic urgent referral (again!) to be sure.

Question is, wouldn't the CT a couple of months ago have picked this up?

They weren't specifically looking at my breasts more to check internal organs (liver, lungs, bowel etc).

I did mention to her I'd recently had CT scan but she didn't really comment.

As an aside, my aunty was diagnosed a few months ago and is having treatment. This probably prompted me as well to check.

TIA

  • Hello AardvarktheAlpha,

You did well to check your breasts and to go and see your doctor when you noticed something unusual. You were definitely not stupid in going to see the doctor after all the tests you had as it may be something completely unrelated to your other symptoms which might require different types of tests.

There is information on this page on what to expect from a breast clinic appointment and tests that are often carried out include a mammogram or ultrasound scan so it may be as you pointed out that the CT scan was focusing on your other internal organs whereas the tests that will be carried out at the breast clinic will specifically focus on your breast.

I am sorry to hear your aunty was diagnosed a few months ago and is having treatment. I hope her treatment is going well. You did well to go and see your doctor but it sounds like your GP was not overly concerned but it's good that they are being thorough and looking into it.

Everything crossed for you that it all turns out to be nothing of concern. I hope that you will hear from other forum members who have been in a similar situation and that they will come and share their experience with you.

    Best wishes,
