Mammogram & MRI after a Biopsy

Hi Everyone,

I've just had an appointment at the breast clinic for a hard lump on my left breast and I am little anxious/confused about the next steps. They instantly were able to detect the lump via touch. Took an ultrasound however it wasn't very clear to see on the imaging. They took a biopsy to confirm what it is. However, when I go for my test results in two weeks, they would possibly like to do a mammogram and/of MRI. They didn't want to do a mammogram today because they had just done the biopsy and didn't want to inflict further pain, which is kind of them. Also I believe an ultrasound is better at detecting lumps at my age (29 nearly 30).

I'm just a bit confused because shouldn't the biopsy confirm what they need to know. Or are they preparing me for the worst? Anyone else been in this situation. I'm not sure where I stand and I probably won't know until I get the results in two weeks.

Thanks x

    Hi Fleur,

A very warm welcome to our forum.

I am sorry to hear about your confusion, but it is perfectly understandable. People under the age of 40 don't usually have a mammogram, as their breasts tend to be denser and they don't show up well. However, there is the exception to every rule. As your imaging wasn't very clear on ultrasound, this is probably why they are considering giving you a mammogram and/or an MRI. This is not that unusual, many of us need additional tests to define the type and staging of cancer.

It is a fact that only 2 people in every 10 who attend the breast clinic will get a cancer diagnosis, as there are many different reasons for breast lumps, so the odds are still in your favour. It is impossible to predict in advance of your biopsy results. If these are clear cut, you may not even need any further tests.

I have had two bouts of breast cancer and had to have additional tests for 3 different lumps. 2 turned out to be breast cancer, but 1 turned out to be clear after biopsy. That was all 13 years ago and I still lead a busy and fulfilling life.

Please keep in touch and let us know how you get on. We are always here for you.

    Kind regards,

    Jolamine xx
