Tonsil hard lump

Hi, I'm new on this forum & apologise if I'm wasting anyone's time or if it's not relevant to anyone else. I'd just be grateful to hear from anyone with the same symptom I have, what it is & what happened thereafter.

A couple of weeks ago I was quite alarmed to find a very hard lump, like a large pea size, inside the soft tissue of the throat side wall below my right tonsil. I can feel it clearly at full stretch of my middle finger, just past the mouth into the throat. It  doesn't hurt, but I became aware of feeling something there all the time so had felt around. It does hurt a bit when I try and move it, but it doesn't move. I'm immuno-suppressed (on strong drug for Rheumatoid Arthritis) so have frequent mild sore throats etc, also chronic dry cough, breathlessness & bad heads that I think are due to the drug, plus have a lot of pains linked to the RA. As the lump is tucked away below the tonsil & abscured by the tongue, I haven't managed to get photos of it.

The GP had a quick feel but didn't check me properly, but said probably a tonsil cyst (but I thought they were softer not rock hard?) & to first get a dentist's opinion, which I am trying to do (but so hard to get an appointment) & depending on that I may be referred to ENT specialist.

I can't anything quite like it online, I've searched a lot. There is a lot on tonsil stones & swollen tonsils & cysts - but it's not reported if the cysts can be so hard. It's not a stone the GP said. It's one hard mass and inside the soft tissue. I'm always rather 'glandy' in the neck & armpits (again, due to being bad with the RA & drug), but haven't felt any new or different neck lumps etc.

I'd be very grateful to hear from anyone who has had something like this. Thank You.

  • Had 2 ENT specialists and neither seemed to take much interest and I also hand an ultrasound on my full neck and thyroid and they didn’t suggest anything unfortunately

I have been searching for answers on something similar. I have a white lump in/ on my tonsil that is size of a pea. Dentist is referring me to ENT . She thinks it is a lymph node. I am very anxious. Did you ever get to the bottom of your hard throat lumps.

  • Hi all. I did eventually get to the bottom of my rock hard, palpable lump in my tonsillar bed - it’s taken 1 year and finally got a CT scan and I have Eagle’s syndrome! Hoping for surgery soon to remove the elongated bone which is protruding into my throat! Hope you’re all well and have got the answers you need xx

Hi BlodynT. How are you? Did you get the answers you needed?

  • Hey I am having the same problem here but waiting on my app from ENT and no diagnosis yet. Can I ask was the lump only felt when you put your head back. I can’t feel a lump sitting idle!

  • Hi, I am going through something very similar. I have been having a persistent sore throat since Easter this year. I have a 4 year old who goes to nursery so she has been bringing all sorts of germs home which we get all of the time, but this sore throat is and has been localised to my left tonsil area. I have noticed that it's a hard lump on my tonsil bed that hurts when I swallow, raise my voice and say certain words. When put my finger there and move my head up and down it changes in size slightly but is still solid and present. It hurts whenever I strain my throat like when I'm crying. I have been to the doctor's three times since April and have only been urgently referred to ENT and have an appointment scheduled next week 12th June. I've been going out of my mind and getting very sick with worry, tearful thinking about how if this is cancer how it will affect my life, family life, if it will be curable, what stage it would be at and treatments I will receive, would it be a case of taking my tonsils out.... I'm scared for myself, scared for my husband and children - my youngest is only 6 months old,I can't leave them behind never getting to see them grow, never being around when they need a kiss and cuddle and reassuring that things will be ok.

I'm just wondering if  you have had any further testing/ treatment? Was it definitely Eagle Syndrome, did you get any further updates/ answers as to how and why it happened?

have you had any updates on yours?

  • Hello Lorjohn2008 and Molly_Moses21

sorry to hear you both have problems! It’s so tough isn’t it when you know something isn’t right but you feel either nobody is listening or you just can’t get to the bottom of it. I finally had a CT scan of my neck done and the hard lump in my throat is actually Eagles syndrome (elongated styloid process). Apparently it’s very rare and lots of people can have a longer bone but present with no symptoms. Mine is long enough to have grown into my throat so I am booked in for surgery and having the bone removed!! - wish me luck! Have had the pre-op but just waiting for a date.  I really had to fight in my appointments at ENT for someone to listen and it took me 9montha to finally get a diagnosis but I cried with relief that there actually was something wrong as I was worried I was cracking up at one point. Try not to worry as it’s gets us nowhere and keep writing a list of symptoms/problems etc and take it with you to appointments. Good luck and keep me posted x

  • Hey, I have had all these thoughts but try so hard not to worry. It can also be something like silent reflux! That can cause the sore throat and the fact you have been ill can be the gland that is constantly swollen if it’s not cleared up properly. I just read about this earlier. I think google can be so bad sometimes but you can’t help but search! I go on 19th to ENT. Just a week after you. Keep me posted and I will do the same.

  • Good luck with your surgery! Thanks for the advice. Keep us posted x
