Nabothian cysts or more concerning? 2ww urgent referral made

I went to the GP today as I had discovered my cervix felt lumpy. I have had intermittent spotting, post coital spotting, periods a week later or early, lower abdominal pain, bloating, gas and loose stools for 6 months or more. I have suffered with tummy problems for years so was less concerned about this, always put it down to IBS but is more recent that it has worsened and pain has moved to lower abdominal right hand side, on occasion I have thought I might have appendicitis.

I had a negative smear and HPV 2 years and 10 months ago.

The GP was a trainee. On consultation she suggested running blood tests and stool sample. She carried out an internal exam and struggled to see my cervix at first. I have always been told my cervix sits unusually low but she eventually found it. She was visibly concerned with what she saw. She described it as 5 or 6 lumps that looked pus filled. She was surprised that they weren't painful when touched but I could feel no pain. She said my cervix appeared a little inflamed and bulky. She took a smear test swab and an STI swab, I didn't even feel her do it!
She said there were no other female doctors working, otherwise she would have got them in for a second opinion and there was no point getting a male doctor in as they rarely see cervixes. She said we need to get you referred to a Gynae in an urgent referral. I asked if this would be the 2 week pathway and she confirmed it would be. She didn't do a good job of hiding her concern. But I don't know if she was just nervous because of her lack of experience?

if this had been an experienced GP making the referral I would be very concerned but from the reasearch I have done, this sounds like nabothian cysts. I had a breast cancer scare a few years ago and it turned out I had 10 cysts in my breasts. When I was pregnant with my daughter (20 years ago) scans revealed a harmless cyst on one of my ovaries. Maybe I am a cysty person?! She didn't say any more about running the initial blood tests and stool sample discussed at the beginning.

Anyone more experienced have a view on it?

Obviously a gynae will be the right person to see and can say for sure but I'm very confused as to whether I should be concerned or not - she never even mentioned cysts, maybe she's never seen them before?!

  • Hi there

It's good the trainee made a referral, blood tests and stool test and like you said gynae are the best people for this. I have done the same ( guilty as charged) of looking up about cysts as I was told today I have a cyst on my cervix. This was by an ultra and the doc didnt  seem to fazed about it. In fact he was saying how common it was. It also came with a slightly thicker lining of the womb. At the moment peri menopause has been spoken about and I think that's what I am going through. Keep positive and this trainee absolutely done the right thing in referring you.

  • I had a colonoscopy and endoscopy for bowel troubles.  All was clear thankfully but they did a ct scan and a fibroid showed up in my cervix that had a heterogeneous appearance.   Anyway they said I need it removed and referred to a gynecologist.    But first I needed an mri.  Had mri got call to say I been referred to gynecologist now and they will take it from there.   Now mention a cyst.   Anyone any ideas what's going on.  I'm in total limbo and very concerned.  Surly if it was cancerous I'd be told as I'd the dye with mri and ct and that shows cancer I believe?? Xx

  • I get where your coming from and it's a worrying time. That's great news about your bowel being all clear. Hopefully you will get an appointment soon with gyne and say either way what exactly is going on. Have you had blood taken? That normally shows a high ca125 level if cancer is present.  I don't really know about the dye. I'm currently waiting for the report of my ultra to go back to my gp and I'm assuming I'll have a referral to gyne. With your cyst...the doc who found mine said majority of cysts are usually harmless. Try not to worry too much. I know harder to do than say. Keep yourself busy.
