Worried sick about throat/tongue/tonsil cancer

Hi, Long story short, I got sick with the ongoing nasty virus 2 weeks ago - sore throat, fever, cough etc. It mostly went away but for some reason last Thursday I woke up to a slight pain in the right side of my throat. It hurts if I swallow in a specific way i.e. tense my tongue, when I yawn really hard and mostly when I depress my tongue towards the back of my throat or my right tonsil (by depressing it I mean using the tongue muscles themselves). I poked around it a few times and initially I thought it is the base of the tongue on the right side that hurts. It almost went away yesterday but for some reason the pain suddenly returned after drinking a glass of wine in the evening. I poked around some more and I found that the painful area is below my right tonsil, where my tonsil ends and tongue starts (by the looks of it). It only hurts if I press on that area and it hurts a lot. I cannot feel any bumps etc. and if I do not mess with it, it does not hurt. It only hurts when I press it by hand OR when I move my tongue. It is not an unbearable pain for sure but it is not negligible either. The strangest part is that it appears the pain is related to how moisturised my throat is. Currently, the pain is mostly gone again. As far as I can tell, I have no painful or swollen lymph nodes in the neck or under the jaw. Can you please tell me whether something similar happened to you or is it possible for a cancer symptoms to start suddenly? I have severe hypochondria an I know that it would be best to go to the doctor but I am really afraid of doing so because I am scared that he might have some bad news.
  • Anyone, please?

The day before yesterday I poked a lot in my mouth. Yesterday I woke up with a nasty pain on the left side (this one did not hurt before) which probably the poking caused. The pain on the right side, for which I initially worried was completely gone.

However, in the evening the pain in the right returned. This time it was ON the tongue for sure, there was a spot that was hurting if I press on it. I poked around some more and this morning I woke up to a similar right sided pain as in the left side yesterday.

I am wondering, can I somehow hurt my tongue / muscles when constantly checking my tongue? But it is also really strange why my tongue did not hurt at all on the right side yesterday and randomly started hurting in the evening.

I am beyone scared to be honest.

  • Hello there,

I am sorry to hear of your health anxiety and I suggest, if it is worrying you so much that you can't wait to see if the problem goes away, that you visit your GP. They are your first port of call.

Unless people on here have experienced the same symptoms, they won't comment. They (we) are not qualified to do so. You could try posting in the 'ask the nurses' section.

Having said that, and given that you have only recently recovered from a virus affecting the ENT region, it's highly likely that this is something related to that. Poking around and contorting muscles will likely only exacerbate any discomfort you are feeling.

    Best wishes

  • I am experiencing the same thing. Did you get to the bottom of it? I've had an ultrasound and MRI and doctors haven't seen anything sinister.
