Ultrasound neck swollen lymph nodes

Hi everyone,

I have been struggling with neck lumps getting larger for the last few months. The doctor said lymph nodes in areas 4 & 5 (if that means anything to anyone, it's the right side of neck and above shoulder) are immobile and swollen. I have also had weight loss, night sweats, recurrent fever, pain swallowing and new hair loss (alopecia Areata). The consultant told me it could possibly be lymphoma so refered me for an urgent ultrasound and biopsy. When I went in for the ultrasound, the doctor said he wouldn't be doing a biopsy. Monday will be 2 weeks of not hearing back, I am sure it will be because it is hasn't shown anything. But I still have alot of anxiety especially as the lumps are getting bigger and the symptoms are not improving, I feel like if he had gone through with the biopsy I would have had more confidence it is all fine. My doctor initially gave me antibiotics before refering me to ENT, which didn't change anything and I haven't had any viruses recently so just wondered if anyone had a similar experience and ever got to the bottom of what it was? Many thanks

  • Hello Elle11 and a big welcome to Cancer Chat,

What a stressful time this must be for you! I can imagine it was a bit frustrating for you to be told that they would not be doing the biopsy but perhaps if the ultrasound didn't flag anything suspicious they deemed it wasn't necessary to carry on with the biopsy. This is something you could perhaps ask them to explain to you so you feel reassured. As you haven't heard anything back, perhaps you could also try and chase your results and get in touch with them just to double check that there isn't anything of concern?

I hope that you will hear from other members of the forum who have had something similar and that they will be along shortly to share their experience with you. Make sure you mention to your GP that the lumps are still getting bigger and your symptoms haven't improved despite taking the antibiotics.

I hope things improve very soon for you and that you find out soon what caused these swollen lymph nodes.

    Best wishes,

  • Hey,

    I hope you're okay,

same thing happened to me today, I was sent for an ultrasound and biopsy but they didn't do the biopsy and I'm not sure why, never said anything as to why they wouldn't be performing one just that all will be discussed with me when I next see the haematologist.

He asked me if I can I feel a lump which was further down on my neck when he was doing the ultrasound but I can't feel anything with my hand so I'm concerned that he found something.

i hope you get your results soon and your mind can be at ease ️ Thinking of you
