Needle biopsy advice thyroid

Hi, I have a swollen gland on the left side of the neck for approximately 8 weeks which I was worried about. I had an ultrasound and they also found 2 nodules on the left side of my thyroid and I have a biopsy next Wednesday. Has anyone had a needle biopsy and would like to explain what it's like? How long were you waiting for results etc?

thank you

  • I'm nervous TBH. I had a double mastectomy in 2020 and wasn't as nervous. I think it's because of it being near the throat. I'm also so drained and floored by the whole thing that I just feel exhausted going into the op, whereas I'd really worked on my fitness prior to the mastectomies.

The FNA is a little uncomfortable and is just like an injection. Honestly. You can do it. Keep me posted X

  • Hey

just got back.  That was an experience it didn't hurt, but just very uncomfortable and the pressure was horrible.   I was ok in the room and during it.  But cried like a baby on the walk back to the car.   I think it's just the reality that this could actually be cancer, setting in.

oh bless you.  I completely get what you mean about it being the throat etc so it feels scarier working in that area etc.    similiar to you, I had a big surgery and was absolutely grand before the op, but this being where it is scares the bejesus out if me ‍♀️

  • Hey! Sorry for the late response I get abit overwhelmed on here sometimes! Glad you managed to get a cancellation appointment, how did it go? Mine is on Thursday I can't wait for it to be over and to hopefully get some answers xx

  • [@dani1985]‍ I was the same. Fine having the FNA and that had to pull the car over to have a good cry.

I had my op yesterday and have been amazed with how well it went. I didn't have drains as my consultant doesn't like them. The op was about 2 hours. I'm not good after anaesthetic but once that wore off I was grand. The pain has been managed with paracetamol. I'm mobile and can eat toast!!! I'll be home fir lunch today. Then it's a 3-4 week wait for core biopsy results.

when do you get your results? Good luck for Thursday [@pepperpol888]‍

  • That's amazing Caz!!  You've actually given me so much hope.   Did you have a partial or full thyroidectomy?

i saw my ENT on Friday 11th Nov and it is thyroid cancer.   I've taken these past few days to digest it all.   I got a call yesterday to book me in for my pre op and surgery.    I was a bit worried that surgery was too close to me travelling home for Christmas as it's a week before, but you've given me so much hope x thank you

how are you feeling in yourself? Are you tired? Emotionally ok etc     Did they talk about radioiodine therapy?

    Xx

  • I just had the half of my thyroid removed that had the tumour on it. That's gone away for a core biopsy so I'm still uncertain whether it's cancer or not.

I'm back at home now feeling fine. I'm tired because I didn't get a wink of sleep in hospital. And I'm not in much pain at all - just tender.

I really hope you're the same. I'm so very sorry about your diagnosis. Did they say which cancer it is? I'm guessing you'll now be having your whole thyroid removed. Let me know when you get a date so I can send lots of positive healing energy your way. Take care x

  • He didn't say which type yet but I'm going to ask on next conversation.  I've had my date already.  It's 16th december.   Met meeting at the end of this month to decide if it's left partial removal or full.

im so glad you are doing well, it's really made me feel at ease.  X

  • Keep me posted. I think if I was in your situation I'd go for the full as I've heard having a second op, through scar tissue can be a bit tricky. But you know you. Trust your instinct and your medical team. Keep me posted after your next meeting x
