Needle biopsy advice thyroid

Hi, I have a swollen gland on the left side of the neck for approximately 8 weeks which I was worried about. I had an ultrasound and they also found 2 nodules on the left side of my thyroid and I have a biopsy next Wednesday. Has anyone had a needle biopsy and would like to explain what it's like? How long were you waiting for results etc?

thank you

  • Have been through thyroid problems myself this year and I had a needle biopsy in June and honestly it's nothing worse than a scratch feeling when they do it, absolutely nothing to worry about. It's similar to a blood test is probs the only way I can describe it. And results are normally around 2 weeks yet, I hope this helps and that it's nothing to worry about

  • I had a fine needle biopsy on my thyroid just under 3 years ago. It basically just feels like pricking yourself with a sewing needle. Stings a bit for a few seconds/minutes but that's all. I went straight back to work afterwards.

I had an appointment a week later to get the results.

  • Hi [@paigerlina]‍ I had my first fine needle aspiration in May and it feels a bit like an injection the dentist would give you. A bit uncomfortable but that's it. I drove myself home. Unfortunately, The results were inconclusive though, Abnormal cells were found and it is now a tumour which is clearly visible in the mirror. I had to wait 3 weeks for the results and was told I would have an operation to remove half the thyroid and lump within 4 months. That's not happened so I've asked for a repeat aspiration. That one was a little more uncomfortable and I felt a little bruised afterwards but nothing too bad. It was 3 weeks ago and I've chased but haven't had the results. Good luck and please keep me posted. I hope you're okay

  • Hi @scomax. Sorry for jumping on here. Just wondered what your outcome was. My FNA was 17th May and came back on June 1st as T3a inconclusive. I'm still waiting for a partial thyroidectomy and core biopsy even though I was told it would be within 4 months. What was your experience if you don't mind sharing? The wait feels a bit much!

  • Hi there,

I'm sorry to hear your results were inconclusive and you're still waiting for results. Keep chasing them! I hope you have some answers soon. Glad to hear the biopsy doesn't sound too painful, I was expecting a lot worse and stupidly watched a video of it being done on YouTube!

I will keep posted on here once I've heard anything. I'm really worried about the outcome, I'm 28 with 2 little boys, it's so worrying :(

  • Thank you for your reply! What was the outcome of your biopsy if you don't mind me asking?

  • I had the ultrasound and biopsy in June, then had partial thyroidectemy in august, got my results 5 weeks later end of September and they confirmed they removed a 4.7cm malignant tumour now I'm for total thyroidectemy and neck dissection on 4th November then they will stage what it was at time of removal etc. But don't take this as this is going to happen to you, everyones is different. Really sorry if this is made it worse, but thyroid problems are very very treatable. If you ever have questions or worries don't hesitate too message and I will help as best I can

  • Cancer was found in my case, but that is not the most likely option. The consultant didn't even seem to be considering it as an option when he did the biopsy. He was just saying, "if it's inconclusive we'll have to do it again, but if it's benign, you'll know everything's OK." He didn't even mention the idea of it being malignant. It was completely "will it rule it out or will you need further tests?"

I just happened to be the 5% where they do find something unexpected.

I know this is sort of trite and probably not possible but do try not to worry too much. Thyroid nodules are extremely common and only about 5% are malignant. The vast majority are completely harmless.

And even if it is cancer, which the odds are against, it's not really what most people associate with cancer. The "survival" rate for the most common forms is close to 100%. I put survival in inverted commas, because the word doesn't even seem to fit when you are talking about rates like 98%.

In my case, I was diagnosed in November, had my thyroid removed at the start of the following January, was back at work by early February and apart from some issues with my calcium levels and a bit of numbness in my neck, have been fine ever since.

  • Thank you for your reply @scomax and good luck fir the next stage of your treatment in November. May I ask if you got a T4 or T5 diagnosis after your biopsy given they operated so soon? Mine was T3 which is between a rock and a hard place with a feeling of 'might' have cancer. That's why they said it wouid be up to 4 months to operate because I'm (rightly) not as urgent as someone with a definite diagnosis. My worry is that there's always going to be someone in front of me and in the meantime my lump is growing, visibly so. Oh well! Thanks again x

  • I have left a message with the secretary today! Good luck  ... and please stay away from YouTube
