Needle biopsy advice thyroid

Hi, I have a swollen gland on the left side of the neck for approximately 8 weeks which I was worried about. I had an ultrasound and they also found 2 nodules on the left side of my thyroid and I have a biopsy next Wednesday. Has anyone had a needle biopsy and would like to explain what it's like? How long were you waiting for results etc?

thank you

  • @cazstu it was a T4. Mine didn't visibly get bigger as weeks went on stayed the same, I'd defo get back at the docs and keep pestering. Took me 7 times to go the gp before they sent me for any scans, then they were cancelled because of covid. So my advice would be to keep pushing gps hospitals whoever it is and keep pestering!

  • Thank you [@scomax]‍ It makes sense that you had an operation quite soon after your biopsy given it showed T4. I think I'm waiting so long as theatre time is so limited that those patients with cancer are given priority, which is the right thing to do. But I'm  whining to wonder if, as long as I remain I'm the might have cancer bracket, whether I'll ever be operated on! I'll just have to chase again and hope there isn't a black mark against my name! X

  • i literally could of written this post!  i have two nodules that need biopsies on the left side of my thyroid.  let me know how you get on please? xxx

  • I definitely will do, can you feel them through the skin or were they just picked up? I only knew I had them as I went for an ultrasound for the lump at the side of my neck which is a gland it's been there 8 weeks. Since finding out I have the nodules I can feel them now under my skin they are smaller than the lump at the side but I don't think I would of noticed them if I didn't know etc.

    hope you're doing ok! X

  • same... i had a lump on my supraclavicular region that was being investigated when they found out i had multinodular goitre which they werent concerned about initially.  then they found a small mass at the tail of my parotid gland via ct that they didnt see before as they didnt scan that area, so i had another ultrasound there on wednssday past, and he said the parotid gland was small so no concern, but tht he saw two nodules on my thyroid that needed biopsies as he was concerned.  he was suprised it wasnt picked up as a concern in the first ultrasound.  so now im waitimg for that appointment that could take 4 weeks.

i couldnt intially feel them, but i can feel one of them now when i search for it.    its all very random lol   how are you coping with the not knowing? x

  • I can see my swelling  bottom neck... has any of you with the larger nodules/lumps  felt like a pulling tight neck xx

  • Sounds quite similar to myself, I'm not sure exactly what the area is called where the large lump/gland is on myself but it's under my jawline below my ear at the side. I'm really worried about it I have days where I'm thinking ok it's probably nothing sinister and if it is I will be ok, then the next day I can't help but think it's something serious and worry about my children etc.

It's all happened quite quickly to be honest  I went to the doctor 26th September had bloods taken same day, ultrasound 7th October, results were back 12th and my biopsy/ENT appointment is 26th.

Hope you are doing okay x

  • Hi, mine doesn't feel tight or pulling, after my ultrasound it felt abit achey though think it was from being pressed on and poked etc x

  • Hi lovely, have you had your biopsy yet?    im still waiting for a date for mine.  but ive just found out today that theyve booked me in for a Barium swallow test on the 11th November.

    hope your ok x

  • Hi there! My biopsy is tomorrow at noon, I'm already itching for the results to come back! I did get given the ultrasound report since last posting and it's given me more information. My doctor slightly misinformed me telling me I have 2 nodules and 1 swollen gland as the report states I have several abnormal/enlarged lymph nodes level II and III (from googling I think the levels are where they are in my neck area). It also says that I only have 1 thyroid nodule 13x12x11mm which is U4 suspicious for malignancy, it says the nodule is ill defined, heterogeneous, hypoechoic and has some Microcalcification as well as some internal vascularity. I've googled all this to find out what they mean etc and they all seem to be signs of it being cancerous. It also says some of the lymph nodes don't have any fatty hilum. I'm crossing my fingers results come back with good news but just feel like it's something bad now.

I've not heard of the barium swallow test, what does that involve? hope you are feeling ok too and not too worried xx
