Severe dyskaryosis

Hi I have received a cervical screening test identifying severe dyskaryosis and just had a colposcopy. At the colposcopy they couldn't see anything on my cervix but they still want to do a Loop exclusion as it may be in my cervical canal. Is this common?
should I be worried the cells may be somewhere else?
is this something anyone else has encountered?

  • I can't really answer your question as I'm not a medical person. I did have a loop exclusion around 23 years ago now. I wasn't concerned at the time, as I knew absolutely nothing about cancer. I had smear tests every year for 10 years and no return.

As for, should you be worried. The obvious answer is 'no', simply because worry never solves anything. Try not to worry - easier said than done, right? They are doing the loop exclusion, so that should sort things out for you and you will have more regular smear tests going forward.

I would think it is quite possible the cells are in the cervical canal if that is what they thought. The abnormal cells can affect any part of the cervical tissue. So, keep in mind, dyskaryosis is not cancer but can be a precursor. Therefore, the fact they have been identified and are going to be treated is a good thing. I'm not sure what you mean about the cells being anywhere else? The best people to ask would be someone with medical knowledge and preferably someone dealing with your case.

I did have a colposcopy last year after there was a suspicious patch on my cervix. Not found from a pap smear, just a general exam as part of investigation for abnormal bleeding. It was an 'incidental finding' and at the colposcopy, they didn't use the dye, just took a look and said, 'oh year, that's a patch of nabothian cysts'. I will be happier when I get my smear test in December just to be certain. I will be even happier when I get a long awaited hysterectomy and the whole lot is gone!

Good luck with your procedure and I hope you will get some peace of mind soon. x
