Bleeding 10 days post LLETZ

Hi guys,

So I had my LLETZ on 27th of  July, felt completely fine after, had no discharge for about 2-3days, then it started with black bits coming out. Then yesterday I woke up with my pad soaked in blood.  Felt like a heavy period throughout the day, but I did not panic, as I have seen a few posts saying this is expected around 10 days in. Then today I literally just walked to the shop and back and it started a lot heavier with a few clots here and there. I am trying to figure out how much is too much?  I have maybe used 4-5 pads today between 8am and 6pm and it kind of goes very heavy non stop flow for a bit and then nothing for a bit. I feel fine, mild cramps from time to time, but other than that nothing - no fever or anything. Felt a bit weak, but figured considering I had so much blood loss in two days is no surprise. I am only getting worried because once it starts it goes rather heavy and soaks the pad almost immediately. Not sure if I should just wait it out and see or just take myself to A&E just in case. Has anyone had anything similar?

  • Hello NN1983 and a warm welcome to Cancer Chat,

As you have been bleeding quite a lot and you mentioned you are feeling a bit weak and passed clots, I would definitely seek medical advice over the weekend on this. Perhaps you could give 111 a call and ask them for advice and whether they think you need to go to A &E to get this looked at? I definitely think it would be a good idea to talk to someone as soon as possible so try and give 111 a call and if you feel things are getting worse rather than better it is worth going to A&E. When you call 111 and speak to someone, do mention everything you have written here and that the bleeding started 2-3 days post LLETZ.

I hope you will hear from others who have had something similar and that you can get medical advice on this very soon.

    Best wishes,

  • Thank you so much for responding Lucie! I thought I would post an update in case if it helps anyone in the future.

So the whole bleeding thing went like this:

friday day 9 - woke up in a pool of blood

saturday day 10 bleeding heavily but feeling totally fine, thought to go A&E but then it stopped around 7pm

sunday day 11 some bleeding, called my insurance gp line and was advised that if I feel fine and just bleeding, there is no need to go to a&e

monday day 12 no bleeding just discharge

tuesday all day barely any discharge then 8pm it kicked off - non stop very heavy bleeding with massive clots - previously I had maybe 1-2 little clots so far. Clots would build up inside me and not come out until I went toilet. I wanted to go to colposcopy dept next day at 9, but by 2am I was filling up inside with clots every 15min so took myself to A&E at 3am. Sat in a&e on my hoodie bleeding on it until 10am when I was finally seen. Doctor put a speculum in and took out a massive clot that looked like its been there for a while - she didnt even need to test anything as it was clear I had the infection just by the smell. She said when I had black discharge in the beginning (I mentioned it had a strong smell) that the smell was indication of infection starting, so keep that in mind if you have the same!

I was kept for 24h and put on a drip of antibiotics and anti clotting medication- woke up today and bleeding has stopped! Was worried could have been an open wound but no, pure infection, even though blood was clean and didnot smell at all. Being sent home with antibiotics today. I hope this helps someone! I wish I had gone a&e sooner

  • Hey everyone,

I just wanted to take a moment to extend a heartfelt thank you to NN1983 for starting this thread. After reading through it, I felt compelled to share my experience, hoping that my journey can provide some comfort or guidance to others who might be going through something similar.

A couple of weeks ago, I underwent a LLETZ procedure. Shortly after, I noticed a troubling black, watery discharge that soon developed a foul smell, particularly noticeable when I changed my pad. I’ve always had a sensitive pH balance, so I’m accustomed to managing it with probiotics and careful choices in personal care. Recognising the signs, I tested my pH with a feminine strip I had, and my concerns were confirmed.

To address the odour, I used my BV gel kit, and thankfully, after just two nights, I felt completely odour-free again. If not, I would have escalated to the hospital for a possible infection.

However, on day 10 post-procedure, things took a concerning turn when I had a long pad filled to about 70% with blood—similar to a heavy period for me. After that, the bleeding subsided to just a few drops, which I managed with panty liners.

Then, on day 18, my period was due, and honestly, it felt like a wave of unexpected intensity. I found myself changing an extra-long pad every half hour overnight, which understandably worried me. I was hesitant to reach out for help due to my aversion to long hospital wait times, even though I wasn’t experiencing pain or discomfort while working from home.

That morning, as I stood to talk to my husband, I suddenly felt an overwhelming rush and rushed to the bathroom. To my shock, I passed a clot the size of a Sanex roll-on. It was a startling moment, and my husband promptly called 111 for guidance. They referred us to the GP, promising a call in about 20 minutes.

As hours passed and the clots began to appear more frequently, I decided to take a bath to ease my discomfort and document everything with pictures of the clots for the doctor. When I called the GP, the receptionist informed me I was still on the call list. Feeling increasingly fatigued, I lay down and continued to browse for reassurance, which led me to this supportive community. I shared everything I found with my husband, and he insisted we go to A&E. I even reached out to a neighbour and some friends for support, just in case.

Four hours later, the GP finally reached out and advised that I go to A&E, puzzled as to why 111 hadn’t suggested this sooner. Thankfully, we were already there. A kind nurse and a gynaecologist greeted me. They checked my vitals, which thankfully were normal, and there was no sign of infection. They explained that the clots were due to the blood coagulating instead of flowing out properly. They performed a procedure to help stop the bleeding and put me on a drip. I had a change of clothes, and thankfully, the bleeding ceased, so I was able to go home.

The doctors explained that the bleeding was likely related to the healing process of the LLETZ wound, which needed a bit more care. Though I’m still experiencing bleeding similar to a heavy period, I’ve been managing it with changes every 8 to 12 hours, and the pad is about 60% full. I’m keeping a close eye on things, especially if it lasts beyond seven days.

I truly hope that sharing my experience brings some clarity or comfort to anyone who might be in a similar situation. You’re not alone, and it’s so important to seek help if something doesn’t feel right.
