Swollen neck/lump

Hi, I'm wondering if anyone has been through the same.

I noticed a couple of weeks ago I had a lump/swelling on the right side of my neck just over from the front.

I went to the doctors and he said it looked fine and he's not worried, it seems to have came out of nowhere.

Hes referred me for a routine ultrasound and I've been told it could take up to 6 weeks to be seen .

I cant help but worry about it.

Thanks for reading

  • Hello 1995k

I'm sorry to hear that you've recently had some health concerns. You did exactly the right things in seeing your GP and it's good to hear that they didn't have any immediate concerns about your symptoms.

We know that waiting for appointments and results can be a worrying time for many people. Hopefully you won't have to wait too long for your ultrasound. You could ring the hospital department and ask if they hold a cancellation list if you're able to attend an appointment at short notice. Sometimes this can help speed things up.

In the meantime, try to keep busy and remain positive. Don't search google looking for answers as it'll leave you feeling more worried.

I hope that you have some news soon.

    Best wishes,

  • Hi thanks for taking the time to reply.

I spoke to the hospital and they said they have referred me as a routine ultrasound so I will be waiting around 6 weeks for a letter.

I'm unsure whether to seek advice from another doctor as more of a second opinion to put my mind at ease further.

I've tried to refrain from googling stuff but I will try trying to keep myself busy to take my mind off things. Thankyou

  • Hello, have they mentioned what it could be at all? Have you had any other symptoms like feeling tired? Speaking from experience, I think it's really important that you get this looked at sooner. If you can afford it, it might be an idea to get a scan completed privately if the wait time is shorter. Then even if it is benign, at least your mind will have been put at ease sooner.

  • Hi! No he didn't say anything apart from he isn't worried about it, which wasn't very reassuring. Didn't mention anything it could be, he said he thinks it could just be my muscle!, I havent done anything strenuous!.

I have no pain in my neck just a dull ache, and if my head is down for a little while my neck has a full/ tight feeling

Yeahai find I'm a little more tired than usual.

    Thanks for replying to me!

I'm going to ring the doctors tommorow and try to speak to another doctor, hoping for some more reassurance.

  • Hello, how are you doing? Did you manage to speak to the doctors again?

  • Hi I am fine thankyou!! It has been moved to urgent so that has made me feel alot better, its Monday the 29th so not too far away.

  • Hi there I wonder if it's same as mine. I've been referred for an ultrasound scan. It's on my left collarbone but at the side closest to the middle and just under my throat.  It appeared suddenly. GP called it a soft tissue mass and said it's not a lymph node which is good. I'm really worried as then she found a breast lump and couldn't say if the two were related :(

  • Sorry to hear you're both going through some worrying waiting times, its not easy when you just want answers! I'm glad you managed to get it prioritised, for your own peace of mind, but as a bit of reassurance both lumps in neck and collarbone could be enlarged lymph nodes which although it can be a sign of cancer, is also commonly a sign that your body is fighting any kind of infection and can become raised when fighting a viral infection too, so please don't hit the panic button just yet. Stay away from Google and find lots to keep your mind busy in the meantime.  I really hope you get answers soon. Sending lots of hugs to you xxx

  • Hi  there if you are worried defiantly ask for a second opinion I was in the same boat 11 weeks ago I found a lump gp told me a swollen lymph node I hadn't been poorly or had any infection so I pushed it. After speaking to a 3rd gp I was referred to the ENT department within the 2 week referral then went for scans and biopsies. I got diagnosed with papillary thyroid carcinoma on Tuesday been for a ct scan since and now waiting for a core biopsy which isn't for another 4 weeks it's been such a long road I hope you get sorted the waiting is the worst part.

  • Sorry I've just seen this!! I asked for a second opinion so my dr hurried it along through the urgent refferal route. So it's Monday the 29th.

It's alot more visible now than before but I don't know whether thats from me staring all the time.

I'm so sorry to hear about your news! Was yours a hard lump or just firm? My lump is firm and unmovable when my neck is up but when my neck is bent it's hard to feel.

I'm assuming that could possibly be where the lump is placed and my neck movement.

Please keep me updated on how you get on wishing you all the best. X
