lump in neck

My partner a few weeks ago discovered a lump in his neck he also has sensitive gums and jaw pain. His Dentist referred him for an urgent scan. A few months ago he had a tooth extraction and root canal.

He was referred and had the tube up his nose letter we received said all clear and that he has a 3cm grade 2 moveable lump and recommended ultrasound and biopsy of neck he had this about 4 weeks ago then they advised him to have an MRI of head and neck and then a pet ct which he had a week ago. He has an appointment tomorrow with the consultant but fearing worse., just feel annoyed that at no point has it been explained to him why these tests are being carried out plus so far no test results.

I have been googling far to much thankfully he hasn't

Expecting bad news tomorrow :(

  • Hi Lump24,

Worrying about what might be is the worst thing and we've all done it.
Generally, tests are carried out to determine that there's nothing serious there especially that your partner's dentist referred him.

So hopefully you'll have better news than your expecting.

Ive found that the forum from Cancer Research or Macmillans is very helpful but there are some sad stories too.

Good luck for tomorrow and let us know how he got on. Tom.

  • Hi Tom

Thank you for taking the time to reply it's really appreciated it's definitely the not knowing as my partner said whatever the situation and if there is some bad news as long as it's treatable then we will be ok.  I have really struggled carrying on as normal its totally consumed me but I think my constant googling has contributed to the anxiety and I generally feel run down myself.  I thought I was quite practical and rational in my thinking but this redlly has been a worrying time. Worrying is a wasted emotion regardless as it doesn't change anything.  I know this but it hadn't helped me ‍

Thanks for the info and fingers hopefully tomorrow will know more

    :)

  • Ps Tom I have just read your other posts - sending support and positivity to you :)

  • Ahhh thank you we'll see how it goes. But I had good news with bad news. I'm concentrating on the good news. Good luck

  • Hi Tom

So he has been diagnosed with the same as you as. We had really positive appointment and explained next step is to take out his tonsils and go from there, they said it's been caught early and is very treatable and even though it's bad news it's good news.

Pet scan showed it's nowhere else thankfully and once they can look at the tonsils they can decide what treatment he needs.

I feel a weight has been taken off my shoulders just heopy we know what's what.  i

    :)

  • I'm sorry to hear that but happy as well.

Its just a matter of focusing on the treatment, easier said though.

Give your partner my regards and to you too.

I'm having my biopsy on Monday so I'll know more about my treatment.

Keep us updated if you wish but you won't be held to that. That's up to you.

     I wish you both well.

  • Hi Tom

Hope all goes well on Monday, did they give you any timescales for when they hope your treatment starts and what it will be or is it a case of assessing after the Biopsy?

For us the surgeon explained he needs to assess the tonsils first to then decide what needs to happen.  Hopefully the tonsil op will be really soon as my partner is keen to get moving which I am sure you are too.

    Take care

  • Hi there,

It'll be two weeks from diagnosis to biopsy on Monday and I was told chemo and radiotherapy.

Today I received notification of a MRI scan on the 12th. So I expect treatment to start shortly afterwards.

I'm working nights this week so missed phone call from hospital. I'll leave phone on tomorrow day time hopefully they'll ring back.

It seems everything coming together after diagnosis.

I'll let you know how it goes of course.

If you check previous post of mine check out "Radioraz" aka Hazel as she has given a virtual tour of her fight with a similar diagnosis to me and your partner and that was four years ago.

Also her other posts with similar people.

    Hope this helps.

  • Hi Tom

just quick note see how you have been?

update our end my OH is recovering after his tonsils were removed last week which all went as well as it could. the surgeon was happy and next step is our appointment next Wednesday to find out what's the next steps.

At the first appointment we were told until tonsils out and tested he could not confirm as of yet whst next steps will be so bit in limbo to be honest but looks like most have radiotherapy regardless.

hope you have been doing ok

  • Hi, so pleased things are progressing and the fact that your/us going through seeing consultants having ops makes this thing a little lighter to accept. I think that anyway.

I've had my op a week last Monday and it's only today that my swallowing has become normal and feeling a lot better. One left tonsil out.

Saw my consultant on Tuesday but unfortunately no biopsy results!

He said that he'll write to the doctor in charge of treatment and he'll receive the biopsy results but anything unusual in results he'll contact me straight away.

My treatment will be chemoradiotherapy so both together. And I've just received notification that I'll be seeing the treatment doctor on Tuesday finally everything coming together.

Like your OH just want this done.

Its frustrating not knowing what the biopsy results are but I'll find out shortly.

Please let me know what happens next with yours.

Apologies for delay but I do this on phone and I'm 62! Enough said.
