Update on neck lump.

It's been 3 weeks since I was last on and things have progressed.

At this moment in time I've been diagnosed with Squamous Cell Carcinoma in the throat after the biopsy and a CT/MRI scan.

I'm having a further more detailed biopsy with in a couple of weeks on advice from the consultant.

He has stated that this is a very common cancer and happily after chemotherapy and radiotherapy he is looking for it to be cured.

My original symptom was a neck lump and nothing else and even now, at this time , I have no other symptoms although my neck lump or rather the area has swollen but not enough to see it.

I, like many of us thought the worse but only as one scenario. I really didn't lose sleep over it but it was always there.

In recent years one of my sisters had breast cancer and it was removed and went through chemo and radio therapy. Only yesterday she bought an exercise bike. It is 18 months since the end of her treatment.

My other sister, I have four, had Thyroid cancer and she is clear after five years and lastly my father had bowel cancer 12 years ago at the age of 75 years. He's still with us.

So when we come on this site and show our concerns because we want advice to help us get through our anxieties I hope that my own case and that of my family give you who are stressing over a possible diagnoses a little comfort.

My journey is just starting so I'll keep the site informed and hope that it may help other people.

It helps me too.

  • Hi Hazel thanks for your help. I have to say I had already read your blog!

I had my pre op today with no date for the biopsy but I expect it within a fortnight.

Difficult over the weekend as I informed my daughter and son I had cancer.

My daughter is a radiotherapist but she was quite upset as my son was.

I did tell my family that the news was positive but still concerning.

At this moment after 3 months of noticing the lump I'm still ok with no pain but I know it's there. (In my neck)

Just want to get on with the treatment now.

It would be tough riding your bike for that long after such a short time from the end of treatment. But well done!!

I'll be going to Greggs instead

  • Hi Thanks for reading my rambling s hope they help.yes the waiting's the worst bit. Any help I can give just ask.  As for Greg's riding my bike at 8 weeks was easier than trying to eat a greggs sausage roll. I kid you not.

    Thanks Tom x

  • Hi Hazel, a quick update.

Biopsy in Monday under general anaesthesic mainly to have camera have a look round and the biopsy. A MRI scan on 12th then hopefully treatment shortly afterwards.

Although apprehensive of the biopsy still positive overall.

    I'll keep updated.

  • Well it's the 31st August and today I came out of hospital today with a PEG fitted ready for my treatment on the 7th September ( at last).

This will consist of chemoradiotherapy, two chemos and six weeks of radiotherapy.

My neck has started to show the swelling so treatment can't come quick enough.

The primary cancer was in my left tonsil which has been removed and has spread as secondary to my lymph nodes and neck.

I know well enough the side effects and although dreading the treatment I just want to get on with it.

Many thanks to those who have took the time to give us their an insight into their journey it really helps.

I will try and do the same. Tom
