Haematology referral for transvaginal ultrasound

Hi so I've been getting some abnormal blood results for a few months, high white blood cell/platelet count. My gp referred me to a haemtologist whom I saw Friday 17th. He took family medical history (mum had AML, sister is end stage heart failure, dad died of a blood clot) discussed my general health ( I have chronic gallstones, diabetes type 2 and severe arthritis) and did a physical exam of my torso and groin area. He then sent me to phlebotomy with several of them blood envelopes and 9 vials of blood was taken. He also requested an appointment for ultrasound. He stated he didn't think there was anything major going on and had given me a slip to hand in at the reception to request a further appointment with him in 6 months.

I wasn't too concerned, however today (wed 22) the letter came to confirm the scan and it states requests for 28th June for:

US abdomen

US pelvic

US Transvaginal

But also another letter says appointment for 29th July to see the haematologist again, which is more like 6weeks than 6months.

So I'm confused, I don't understand the request for the pelvic/transvaginal ultrasounds as he didn't mention that this was something he would do, just stated abdominal ultrasound and also why would he want to see me again so soon after he had said 6 months before.

Does this mean a likelihood that something has shown up in the many blood tests he did? I'm really not sure what he tested for, just the envelope colours which were the normal red one, a green one, a light blue and a dark blue and then a sheet of paper. I did take a photo but it's not very clear so I was only able to check a few things when I got home.

Any advice or information that anyone could provide would be welcome.

  • Hey, update on everything. Haematology was pretty much sorted out, my white cell count and platelets are still high, but the consultant feels that is most likely a gyne issue so I only have a follow up bloods in 4 months with him.

Went to gyne clinic today after cancelling previous appointment after I tested positive for covid. So results of ultrasound showed a 6cm ovarian cyst with no blood flow which was good news, but the edges on the cyst are concerning so I've been referred for an urgent CT scan. It also showed up a abnormality in my womb, that looks like a suspicious polyp so I've also been booked in for something called a hysteroscopy and removal so they can get that taken out and it investigated which is on the 12th Aug so pretty soon, which is scary. Then I've been told I will go back to see the gyne consultant and a care team to see what happens next depending on all the results.

I hope your doing well and that u have more of an idea what is going on with you too.

  • Had a phone call today with the date for my scan which is on Tues 9th. Gyne wasn't kidding when they said it would be soon. Also found out that it isn't just gonna be a pelvic scan but chest, abdo and pelvic. Lady on the phone explained that it had been upgraded to that due to some blood results, so I'm guessing the CA125 and CEA results were not normal then but no real clue.

  • The results of my ultrasound scan sound pretty similar to yours in that they've said possibly no blood flow but it is an' irregular  loculated adnexal mass' and also polyps. I had my hysteroscopy immediately after the ultrasound, I had been told to take painkillers at least an hour before my appointment. I found the procedure uncomfortable rather than painful but was told there was gas and air there if I needed it. Unfortunately she was unable to remove the polyps but I had biopsies. Anyway I was told from the start that I would need CT scan of chest, abdo and pelvic and an MRI so please don't read too much into the 'due to some blood results' as I had not even had my blood tests at that time. My scans are all done now and I'm awaiting results and details of what comes next. Wish you all the best for your upcoming scans etc

  • Had my Hysteroscopy today! That was extremely uncomfortable but I got through it with the use of gas and air, still getting some cramping and bloating, but it is easing off slowly.

Anyway, ca125 test came back as 13 which I'm told is normal so that's good and the gynecologist was happy to report that my womb seemed healthy on camera, but they did take a biopsy anyway just to be sure. Still waiting for the results from my CT scan, but I'm definitely feeling a lot more optimistic about things now.

  • I'm glad you got through the hysteroscopy and hope you are fully recovered soon. The CT and MRI scans determined for me that the 'adnexal mass' was a benign ovarian cyst - so lets hope you get the same outcome.

I have to go back for repeat bloods in September and further womb biopsy in 6 months time. They said my womb lining seemed healthy on camera so I am hoping they are just being thorough. I still don't know what is happening about the polyps though

  • Still got some cramping and spotting this morning but it is better than yesterday, just like mild period pain now.

I'm glad it all seems to be positive for you, with the cyst being benign, let's hope I get the same outcome.

They apparently had my multi discipline meeting yesterday afternoon (which I thought I had to attend, but apparently not) and the gynecologist said she would either ring or send me a letter with the outcome from that, what follow up will be etc.

  • Hope you manage to get answers.
move been having similar issues and my tests are similar.
they found lesion on my ovaries but it did have its own blood flow. I was referred on cancer pathway over two weeks ago and heard nothing so far. Hopefully we both get answers soon
