Delay to breast core biopsy results....

I had a core breast biopsy at the end of march and was booked an appointment 10 days later to collect my results

The day before results day I had a call saying the results weren't back yet and they added an extra week waiting time , so now due to get them this Friday.

Anyone else in a similar situation? I don't know if the delays are due to Covid related staff shortages (which would make sense ATM) or because they found something than needs further tests?

I just wish they had told me why they were delayed! Naturally I would be a lot less concerned if I knew it was due to staff shortages....

If anyone has had a similar experience at this current time?

  • Hi Kate,

Yes, I'm in a very similar position...I understand how you must be feeling.

My appointment changed to 22nd April instead of 14th.

I too have speculated the reasons: lots of backlogs, covid related staff issues, also the results need to be reviewed in a team meeting so that may have been rescheduled...

Have you tried contacting your consultant's secretary, they may be able to shed some light.

Different health authorities have different issues, I'm hearing 2 week referral dates aren't  being met in some areas.

Hopefully you will get some answers to lessen your worry in the meantime

  • Hi thankyou for replying!

Where abouts are you based? I'm in Hampshire.

I did speak to the admin staff who contacted me about the change in the appointment but she made it very clear that she is just the messenger and knows nothing about the when/why and how's!

I'm trying to be patient and it's just a worry and I'm hoping desperately that I don't get another call to delay them again. I guess if the 2 week wait time is a national standard it makes sense that this may not be met at the moment because of backlog/Covid etc.

Thankyou though it does help hearing others (well at least 1 person!) Is in a similar situation...

  • Hi Kate,

I am waiting for a different biopsy result - and I haven't in fact been given a follow up appointment! But I've been told that the path labs are all running behind at the moment. I've been told a minimum of 3 weeks for my results - I'm just over my first week and I just want to know what alien they took out of me!

Good luck to you and Plumlet too - I'm glad you both have an appointment to work towards.

  • Oh I was in Hampshire yesterday. My Partner and I took a little drive to The New Forest. I live next door in Dorset.

I hear Essex is very backlogged.

Like you, I would be able to cope better knowing the exact reason for the delay...stop the mind wandering.

Hopefully your post will reassure anyone else wondering if it's just them having their results delayed

  • Hi Songbird,

Thank you for confirming the lab situation and for your good wishes.

I hope you're recovering well from the "alien" removal ( who says they don't exist eh? )

    * Apologies in advance if that comment above isn't appropriate and comes across as insensitive. I'm not making light of your situation at all...I rather like that you refer to it as an alien.

  • Hi Plumnet,

No offense taken! I have had a lump removed out of my buttock - another nice fleshy area, but not commonly thought as an area of concern. However - this thing was not what they were expecting to uncover (hence alien) - previously referred to as Lenny the lump. I waited a long time to have it removed - after being told at least 5 times it was benign. Now in limbo as the surgeon took it out and - being totally wide awake (something I hope never to repeat) said nothing - no 'it's just as we thought', or 'it's nothing of concern' - he said absolutely nothing. So now I have to wait and I really have not a clue what was removed.

  • Hi Songbird,

Lenny sounds a bit more friendly to be fair

I don't know if you've ever watched Dr Pimple Popper but she regularly removes growths from various places on her patients but is very enthusiastic and vocal about what it looks like...it is for American TV though.

I imagine UK surgeons to be rather more reserved so unlikely to speculate either way, especially to a conscious patient, and rather wait for a biopsy.

I hope you don't have to wait too much longer and it proves to be a benign Alien....more like E.T.

  • Hi Plumlet,

Yes I watch Dr Pimple Popper - and she does tell her patients what she's removed straight away if she is sure. My lump was removed by a general surgeon though. He was very mouthy pre-op - which is why the silence was so unusual!  I am almost certain he opened me up and thought - whoops!!!

Anyhow This is kind of pinching a thread and going off on a tangent :-D  I hope that you ladies get your results soon (and that I get mine too) and we can all figure out what's next!

P.s giving your lump a name kind of helps - you can swear at it then!! One of the nurses thought it was very funny that I had named mine Lenny - she said it just had to be a man giving me trouble xx

  • Hi Kandykate,

My original consultant appointment was delayed by around a week too so that biopsy results would be back.

I'm in Hampshire. Not sure we're allowed to mention specific hospitals or doctors but the breast clinic I am under is in Basingstoke.

I know they have had a lot of covid affecting staffing; I had surgery delayed twice because if it so it could be similar for your results.

Hope you are not kept waiting any longer. The waiting is definitely the hardest part.

    Sending best wishes x

  • I had biopsy done today and was told would be 3-4weeks for results, because of staff shortages and bank holidays, so maybe not anything negative
