Red and inflamed cervix found at a pap test

I went on Thursday for my smear test and the nurse started and straight away said I need a doctor to have a look as it's red and inflamed , the doctor looked and then the nurse did the test then when I was dressed the doctor took me to her room and said that she was referring me in the two week wait and all the doctor kept saying was I am so sorry I am thinking that it's cancer she didn't say it could be anything else I have done nothing but panick since l, has anyone been through the same please

  • Hello Cuddlydudly,

Please try not to panic, as there's no way of knowing for sure until further tests are done. I'm sorry about how you're feeling and it's natural to think the worst, but this can end up increasing anxiety rather than making you feel better. If you have any concerns ahead of your next appointment, writing down any questions you have beforehand might be helpful. You can read about the urgent referral process here.

    All the best,

  • Hi cuddlydudley

I’m sorry you are feeling so anxious about this. Is it you that is thinking it is cancer? I couldn’t be sure from your post.

One of the main reasons for a red and inflamed cervix is a condition called cervical ectropion, when the cells from inside the cervical canal grow on the outside making it look red. Sometimes this bleeds.

This most important thing is that this is NOT cancer, and not connected with cervical cancer.

When you see a nurse or gp, they are not experts in gynaecological conditions and so refer you to a gynaecologist to check everything thoroughly. It doesn’t necessarily mean that you have cancer.

I hope your referral can put can put your mind at rest and give you some reassurance. x

  • Hi minska

It was the doctor thinking that and didn't say it could be anything else I have received my referral and it's on the 24th  Thankyou for putting my mind at rest

  • Hi again

I really hope it’s something simple for you. You don’t have too long to wait, which is good.

If, and it’s still an IF it is cancer, I hope you can come back here for some support. I’ve been through this, so If I can help you in any way, I will. Best wishes. x

  • Hi there, I have had a similar experience to the OP except I had an unexpected BV infection that was being looked at by my GP and she got a second opinion and both doctors agreed that although the redness on my cervix could be an ectropian it didn't look like what a typical one looked like and they hadn't really seen it before -  it was only red on one side - she showed me a picture of an ectropian and it is pretty symmetrical in redness around the cervix. Apparently mine isnt so have been referred for a colposcopy.

My question is this:  The colposcopy is set for 27th December and we are meant to be away for Xmas,  I will have to change the whole Xmas plans if I am to take this.  Hospital have said next appt not until 7th Jan.  Is it unwise to wait, albeit only 10 days?  The first GP who raised concern did so on 2nd Dec so it will be over a month since they first saw it
