Referral to breast clinic

Hiya,

So basically, my mum had a routine mammogram back in July which picked up some microcalcifications which they biopsied twice in August. Fortunately it was all benign and she got the all clear via telephone call in September!!

Since then, (it is March now) she said she has been having shoulder pains for the last 2 months and along with the shoulder pain she also had outer right breast pain (the same breast that was biopsied). I booked a GP appt asap in Feb and the GP felt it and said it is peculiar becuase there is no solids lump there per day but it feels more like thickened soft tissue in one area that then just disperses. I asked her multiple times, "does it feel suspicious?", as they know what to feel for. She said it does not feel suspicious or like a hard lump but just to draw a line beneath it all and esp since she only had a routine mammogram which picked up nothing bad a few months earlier. That way we can then focus on her shoulder. She said she feels it is just linked to the shoulder. My mum is 52 so she has referred to the breast clinic.

I am really worried as last time I do not think she was referred to the breast clinic?? She was just investigated following a routine mammogram. I am now really worried on what the process is at the breast clinic - how do they give the results??? The GP said she doubts they will do a biopsy but may just do an ultrasound of the right breast. Will they just tell her then and there??? Does she have to go in again for results? Will it be a phone call? I am worried sick and I was just like this last year when she was being biopsied etc. The GP said not to worry but of course I am going to worry. Last time, we got an appointment letter the day after her final biopsy with a telephone appointment. I am really scared.

so sorry for the long post xx

  • Hi,

In July I felt similar in my right breast, to me it felt like thickened tissue. I saw the GP the next day and she referred to me to the breast clinic on an urgent 2 week referral and I was seen within 6 days. My GP did say it was probably benign but best to get it checked. I was a state and when I got to the breast clinic I was so upset and worried. A nurse took me into a little room and explained to me that lots of woman come to the breast clinic and most of them do not have breast cancer.

I was then called in to see the doctor and she felt it and said it feels benign but sent me down for an ultrasound just to be sure and once I'd had the ultrasound they told me straight away that there was nothing there except dense breast tissue and a couple of cysts. She said she wasn't even gona bother doing a biopsy as there was no doubt in her mind it was anything sinister.

I know it's a worrying time but apparently only 1.5 woman in 10 referred to the breast clinic actually have breast cancer. It's a precaution and it's good they are sending your mum there to put her mind at ease but I know it's a worrying time xx

  • Hi Emma, thank you for taking the time to reply.

Thank you for your insight! I am just worried everything will become very technical once she gets there - last time they had to repeat the biopsy twice and we never really had any formal explanation for why which made me worry even more!! She also had an ultrasound of the right breast and they said she had stromal  fibrosis and "parallel oriented hypochoic foci with il-defined margins" which is worrying me but "no other satellite lesions seen in the upper outer quadrant."  I am worried that they will want to do a biopsy - my mum has had such an ordeal with being poked and prodded from last time! Although the GP did say she doubts they will do a biopsy. After your biopsy they just discharged you? xx

  • No I didn't have a biopsy, she said there was no need as she could tell from the scan there was nothing there except lumpy tissue and a couple of breast cysts which apparently are really common.

Hopefully your mum won't need another biopsy but if she does they are probs just trying to rule everything out, I know it's hard but try not to worry as it probs isn't anything to worry about. Keep me updated how she goes xx

  • Hi Emma, hope you are well - just wanted to update you.

So mums appt was supposed to be on Tuesday but obviously we had to reschedule this - I rang the bookings dept/breast clinic more than 50 times on Monday and not a single time did I get through!!! I was livid. Even the 2WW Co-ordinator who called us and left her number did not bother to call back despite me leaving 5 voice messages. I am seriously considering complaining.

Anyway, they called on Monday to say the doctor has covid and it is now cancelled and will be rebooked . Her appt is now tomorrow- Thursday- but we still haven't received the appointment letter in the post!

I am so scared I am shaking

  • I went to the breast clinic last week and some of the patients had relatives with them they had to wait outside of the clinic waiting area but were allowed to go into the consultant with the patient. In your position l would go with your mum.
take care hope it's all ok

    susie

  • Hi Susie, that's the thing - I started a new job this week so can't really - I think my dad will go with her. Why do you think I should go with her in my position? Thank you xx

  • I'm just suggesting that you go or your Dad, so that someone can hear what's said when you are stressed it's hard to remember everything.  We only take in a part of every drs appointment. If you have any questions write them down and your parents can ask for you.
The breast clinic nurses are really helpful and they are up to date with the current treatments if any are needed. The appointments can take a while on first visit as they may need do repeat  mammogram or ultrasound. I was told that the ultrasound ect are only a snapshot of the day that they are taken,  Last week I was there for two hours and I only saw the consultant. No mammogram or ultrasound.
Try to relax and and see what the day brings hopefully all will be fine.
I've been going to the breast clinic for 45 years due to inflamed milk ducts and breast pain. lve had repeated surgery and antibiotics but no cancerous tissue has been found in the biopsies.
