Referral to Gynaecological oncology

Hi,

stressful few weeks and grateful of anyone that can relate and offer reassurance or advice.

I have had heavy periods for around 3 years. Started spotting between occasionally last year and was referred for an ultrasound sound which revealed nothing.

spotting between periods suddenly became heavier and every month around october last year. Mentioned at my smear in Jan and next thing I had a gynae appointment at hospital.

womb biopsies we're taken but consultant seemed very blaze and was talking about pre menopause and placing a Mirena hormone coil at next appointment. Scheduled an ultrasound for a couple of weeks to double check.

ultrasound was weird. I made a joke about "spaying" and the ultrasonographer very seriously asked if "that was something I would consider", I heard her whispering to the nurse as I got dressed and then when I was dressed she asked if I had blood tests?! I asked her to expand and she flatly refused as she's not a dr. Told me I should get an appointment in 2 weeks or so to discuss (I'm aware that's fast)

Friday I received  a  letter requesting I attend an appointment at Gynaecological Oncology. Is it a given that they have found cancer at this point? No one had ever mentioned cancer until I had gotten this letter and I'm terrified.

I have 3 kids with extra needs and leaving them at this point in their lives would impact them forever . Do oncology deal with other issues or is it a flat - no this is the cancer route?

    I went to the gynaecology oncology clinic last spring and they found ovarian cysts l have had them removed recently and they were benign. The clinic is a good way to be seen quickly rather than waiting months. My consultant was really good and spent 4 1/2  hours removing extensive adhesions that other surgeons would have bailed out and left them in situ. My left cyst was completely embedded and that's probably what caused the pain. The gynaecology clinic is the place to go for the up to date treatment and help with your condition.

    l hope you have a similar outcome to me.

    I have thickened womb lining firbroids and had uterine polyps 3 times since 2017.

    The first time the GP found a polyp which was popping out my cervix from inside the womb during a smear I was put on the 2 week pathway which sends you to gyny cancer basically. 
    since then, mainly because I have gone private its been diagnostics and not mentioned cancer until they remove stuff or take samples etc and then the word pathology comes into the whole process.

    Like you I get heavy periods and break through bleeding , which has gotten worse over the years

    Im currently awaiting biopsy results on the latest polyp and womb lining scrapings.
    If any of this comes back positive or 'atypical' I will be sent  to oncology in a NHS hospital.
    I must stress though even with atypical hyperplasia thats still not actually cancer its sort of pre cancer. 
    I would think they would have already got the results of the pathology of your womb samples and the scan will show up anything abnormal on your ovaries. ( I have the process done the other way round scans first hysteroscopy/ polyp removal second)

    I wouldnt get in too much of a state about where your follow up appointment is, its just the messenger, not because of the diagnosis.

    Till then take comfort in the fact most gyny cancers are far more serious after menopause as they go ages without being investigated
