Ovarian surgery - what can I expect recovery to be like?

Hi everyone

I am due to have surgery on Thurs (covid permitting) to remove a 16cm hopefully dermoid cyst and my left ovary and fallopian tube. Yes it's big, yes I can feel it and yes it's causing me issues bit only really became clear after I'd had long covid. It's not been a good 8 months!

I've been told they will attempt keyhole surgery but it may become open surgery due to the size. What can I realistically expect recovery wise after surgery for either and how long until I can drive, go back to work, feel normal again?

Thank you. The posts here are so helpful x

  • I had my enlarged complex overies removed in October , they tried keyhole but so many adhesions that they had to open my abdomen to find the overy The excision of of the adhesions took 4 1/2 hours  which was a bit of a shock. They told me pre op that l may need open surgery   But this cancelled the rest of the list, my surgeon was the oncology one who said other surgeons would have bailed and not removed all of the adhesions. The lower scar is about 7/8 inches long I stayed in hospital for 5 days  it's taking a while to get really back to normal and carrying heavy things like  the shopping . I have just gone back to school visiting with my therapy poodle as l couldn't walk him. I was told not to drive until I felt comfortable you need to be able to twist and turn comfortably. I have not needed to returned to work as l am retired l was really pleased that the biopsies were benign lm really pleased that l have had this done.

  • Thank you that's good to know about driving after, I guess I'll just need to wait and see really but it's hard to plan/think ahead when you've got no idea!

I'm so pleased everything worked out well for you. Take care x
