Found a lump in breast at 26

I'm Emma, 26 and on Saturday night I found a lump in my right breast. Today I went to the doctors, the nurse could feel it too and has referred me to the Breast clinic, unfortunately it's on a non-urgent basis due to my age. I have two young girls, aged 2 and 11 months and I feel sick at the thought of anything happening to me and leaving them. I don't know why I'm writing this but I just needed some where to vent. Hoping the referral comes through soon, but it's terrifying me that this appointment could change my life forever

  • Hi Emmal2309, sorry to hear you find yourself here. That must be tough being referred as non urgent due to your age too. I am 35 and have my appointment at the clinic next Monday.

I have a lump in my left breast, well actually more than one! I first had symptoms like a blocked duct but haven't breastfed for over 2 years, although I also felt unwell and had a high temp so at first I was treated with antibiotics. It was still there so now been referred. The doctor said mine felt like a benign cyst or possibly a fibroadenoma, but I have since found at least one other lump in the same breast so worried sick.

I have a 4 year old and feel exactly the same as you! I really hope it's a good outcome for both of us! I know things like fibroadenomas and other benign conditions are common in your 20s or 30s, but I can't help but think it has to happen to someone. I also have a lot of cancer in the family and I lost my Mum to cancer too, but not breast cancer.

    Happy to chat anytime. x

  • It sounds like you're having the exact same thoughts as me. I too feel like it has to happen to someone and that could possibly be me.
Tonight has been awful all I can think about are the what if's, I'm hoping I'm not waiting to long for my appointment The Nurse also said to me that shes 80% sure its a benign cyst as its smooth, here's hoping its good news for the both of us! I too have had lots different types of cancer in the family but never breast cancer, I just hate thinking that going to that appointment could change me forever, it makes me not want to go just so I dont find out bad news.
    hope you are doing okay?!

  • I was the same when I first found it! My anxiety was so high! I'm still bad at times but have calmed a bit as was making myself feel ill through the stress of it all! I also found I couldn't stop checking it and made myself sore! I also google too much as well, which I know I shouldn't! I'm a worrier anyway! I'm exactly the same, would rather pretend it's not happening! The gp reassured me she didn't think was anything sinister but that doesn't help much as she doesn't know 100%. It's hard not to think the worst, I think everyone's the same. It's hard having to go alone due to covid as well. That worries me too if it was anything! Hope you manage to get some sleep.

  • I'm exactly the same, keep hAving to stop myself from googling, just hoping I get my appointment date soon. At least then I know what date I will be checked! Got a feeling it will be on my daughters 1st birthday in Feb though. How are you feeling getting closer to your appointment? Xx

  • It is hard not to definitely, it makes my anxiety worse though! I hope you get a date through soon and it's not on your daughter's birthday! I am feeling really anxious about it the closer it gets! I just want it to be over but also terrified I will get bad news! Also worried if I need a biopsy there will be another wait! How do you feel today? x

  • I found my first lump when I was 19, and then another around 24. Luckily both weren't cancerous but I did have them removed.

In regards to the biopsy that was done at my first appointment at the breast clinic, I didn't have to wait for another appointment so hopefully you won't too. Although it won't take the stress away I hope that this helps x

  • Hi Lauren, thank you for this. I'm glad to hear all was OK with you. How long did it take for you to get the results of the biopsy? The wait for that worries me too if I need to have it x

  • The results took a couple of weeks, I know how it feels though. I'm currently awaiting results for a very rare ovarian cancer (it's had to go to Birmingham and the rare cancer centre in London) it was found on my 20 week scan whilst pregnant with my now 5 month old little boy and I'm still not got a final answer. I've still got to have a CT scan before I get the chance of seeing the consultant again.

I would say if you haven't heard then chase the results, don't be afraid to ask. It's your health and you need to priortise yourself.

    X

  • I'm so sorry to hear what you are going through. That must be so difficult with a baby too. Having a young child too, I just can't imagine how tough it is for you. I really hope you get some answers soon and have the best possible outcome. Thank you so much for taking the time to reply to me. I will definitely chase anything up if I need to have a biopsy etc and havent heard. I have my appointment at the clinic Monday so will find out then. Wishing you all the best x

  • Hope your appointment went okay today, I've been thinking of you today. Let us know how it went xxx

  • Hi Emma,

Thank you for thinking of me. I am very relieved to say I have been told I have cysts ranging in size but all harmless. I think i almost have more cysts than breast tissue in places but I feel very grateful as I know some women today won't have had good news.

I was told by the radiographer doing the ultrasound that it was cysts so I knew before seeing the consultant. He also checked both breasts and confirmed harmless cysts.

Have you had your appointment through yet? Please keep me updated on the outcome x

  • Oh I'm so happy that you got good news and its nothing to be concerned about!!

Still no appointment but rang Gp today and they confirmed the referral was put through last Monday so I think I'll give it another 2 weeks and ring the breast clinic direct to see where I am on the list.
Hopefully will here something soon and will keep you updated!!

  • Thank you!

I hope you hear in the next week or 2 then, or even better sooner! It is strange how they all seem to work so differently. I will be thinking of you and hoping for a good result x

  • Had my appointment come through today, its for next Wednesday night, hoping everything goes okay but I've started having some pain where the lump is so not hopeful xx

  • Hi Emma, I'm glad your appointment has come through and I really hope it's good news for you! Please update on here when you have been. Sorry to hear about the pain, i don't think pain is always a bad sign and I've often read it doesn't usually go with anything sinister. I have pain in my cysts, particularly with my cycle, so I hope it's the same for you and something benign. Wishing you the best of luck x

  • Hi I just want to put a little positive post on because I made myself sick with worry over the last week about and lump and pain in my breast. I have been to the breast clinic today and it is benign fatty tissue. I was reviewed by the breast consultant and then had an ultrasound. The pain is both hormonal and also not wearing the correct fitting bra since I've had my baby. I'm 29. im sure you will be fine x

  • This is what mine is too! All benign thank god!!!!

  • I know these posts arent recent and im glad it Was just cysts. Can i ask what your cyts felt like and where abouts? I have a growth which is lower part of my right boob and i can grab it with my breadt tissue. Feels round and moveable but firm and not tender. Xxx
