Breast pain

Hello,

Not sure where to start but my anxiety is so high I feel writing things down may elevate some fears until I have my drs appointment.

I noticed a lump in my right breast on the right side quite deep down. It was a few weeks ago now and was maybe a week before my period.

I made a telephone appointment with the drs and that same day they offered me a face to face due to the nature of what it was, unfortunately I was at work all day and had to rearrange. They told me to ring up and make another appointment the next day which I did. They then could only offer a face to fave a week later which was Wednesday just gone, however I got covid and had to rearrange to this Wednesday coming.

Since finishing my period I believe the lump has reduced (I'm trying to feel for it less as I think I'm causing myself pain feeling and checking several times a day). I have since noticed (last couple of days) a pain in my right breast, a dull ache that comes and goes. I haven't needed pain relief but I very aware of the pain and its made me very fearful.

My right breast has always been bigger and I have put on weight, maybe an ill fitting bra? Maybe a pulled muscle from my right arm that radiates to my breast? I really don't know and my searching on Google is really not helping. I do believe its tender and never noticed it like this before. The anxiety is literally affecting my day to day living, whisky waiting for my gp appointment, and then the potential other referrals.

  • Hi.  I understand how you are feeling.  As someone who has found numerous lumps over the last 4 years I know how terrifying it can be.  All mine were benign fluid filled cysts.  Your GP will almost certainly refer you to the breast clinic.  Don't panic, they always do this just to make sure everyone is checked thoroughly.  They will refer you and if you are very anxious they will do it as an 'urgent referral'.  This freaked me out but it will be for practical reasons otherwise you probably wouldn't be seen for six months due to backlogs with Covid.

They are really thorough and you will probably have mammograms and/or ultrasound.  I wouldn't be a bit surprised if you have a cyst as it sounds hormonal.  If so they will drain the fluid with a needle and you're done!  They are nothing sinister and I've had three of them.  MOST breast lumps are benign.  I hope what happened to me may reassure you a bit.  Take care x

  • Hi Vegmum

Thanks for your reply. I saw your update and what a great result :). Glad you got seen and got the all clear. I definitely feel some aching again since my consultation but to be expected xx

  • Hi Mary

Thanks for your reply and going through your experience. I find there are alot of scaremongering things out there, this forum is very good for support and all clear experiences.

It's a relief to see a Dr as I don't know what a cancerous lump really feels like anyway.

I've probably had this lump for ages and it just changes with my cycle which I've never noticed as I don't always do my checks.

Thanks for your help and  I will be trying to put this at the back of my mind for a bit xx

  • Hi Ljmile, that sounds positive that your lump has reduced in size and your GP wasn't too concerned about the pain. It's interesting that everyone over 30 gets referred, I am in my 30s so explains that too.  I'm glad both our GPs are being cautious anyway. Mine definitely feels softer and slightly smaller so I really hope it's hormonal.

I had read about it being a few hours, from what I understand you normally have an ultrasound, possibly a mammogram and obviously meet with a consultant. I was really shocked as didn't think I would get a date via email so fast, I thought it would all be delayed because of covid too.  I hope you get a date through quickly!

  • Hi Mrs RL

I've had my clinic app through already, although I have made a bit of an issue with it. I was working the day of the app and tried to swap my shift, it didn't happen so I swapped my app for 6 days later and really regretting it now as a girl at work said they have to let me go, going to ring up tomorrow and try swap back.

My anxiety has increased so much again, I feel the pain/aching in it again and feel like it's grown again from getting smaller. Maybe it's my cycle, I don't know. But it's the pain that's getting me down.

Hope everything just gets sorted and done quickly and can move on from this anxious stage.

  • Hi Ljmile, sorry to hear the problems you've been having with your appointment. Have you managed to sort it? I hope you have managed to swap it back. What date is yours?

So sorry your anxiety has increased! Some days I am very anxious and others a bit more positive but always worried! I feel like mine has definitely changed with my cycle, I had a few days with no pain and then during the middle of my cycle and ovulation I have had pain and the whole area was tender.

I really hope we can both move forward soon and have a positive outcome! x

  • Finally had my clinic appointment yesterday and relieved to say all was okay and nothing suspicious was found. Most likely glandular tissue. The Dr and ultra sound lady were very thorough and did give me alot of reassurance and even took them a while to find my lump. I do believe its probably hormonal and is something that is changing with me as I get older. Feels like a huge weight lifted and need to focus on other things now x

  • Thats great news, what a relief. Mine was glandular tissue too. I still find it disconcerting that my right and left breast feel differently to each other but least i know its nothing to worry about as its all been checked. I just have to get used to my new normal!

    Have a great week

    x

  • Hi Ljmile,

I am so pleased to see your update and can imagine you are very relieved! I'm so glad all is well. Thank you for updating us!

I am still struggling at times to move forward after being so anxious, even though I know it is cysts I don't like the fact they are still there but hopefully I will get used to it. I just hope they go on their own. I think the same that mine is hormonal, as I read after 35 it is common for breasts to change.

Wishing you all the best and hoping we can all move on from it and enjoy life x

  • Hi Vegmum,

I've just seen your message and I'm the same as you! Even though I know mine is cysts, I don't like them still being there as mine weren't drained or anything as he just said simple cysts! I'm really hoping they go on their own. I guess we just have to get used to this new normal and the way our body is changing as we get older. Hope you are well otherwise x
