Indeterminate breast calcifications

Hi, has anyone else had this issue?  I went into breast clinic with another lump (I've had numerous fluid filled cysts over the last four years).  That was all fine but they flagged up calcifications on the other side.  I was really shocked.  I've got a biopsy next week and I'm in that horrible inbetween place of not knowing and worrying.  Is this likely to be DCIS?  Thanks x

  • Hi All!

I hope everyone managed to get at least a little bit of respite from the fear and anxiety this weekend.

Vicki - how was the beach hut? Hope that fresh air did the trick for you.

    Take care of yourselves xx

  • I took the kids to the cinema on Saturday, and then had my sons 4th birthday party on Sunday. So I've managed to keep quite well distracted!!

The breast clinic just called, and they've moved my results appointment to 9:40 on Thursday, instead of 11:40. So at least I don't have to worry all morning. It will be school run, then appointment!! Praying for benign results!! Xxx

  • Welcome Tinylon.

You're not wrong....waiting is absolutely hellish.

And really sorry to hear you now have to wait for another week. That's ****.

The ladies on here are all fabulous and supportive so feel free to moan, vent, or whatever helps! I've really valued having this forum to share with others who are going through similar and truly understand.

Thank you for sending luck! Right back at you for next week xx

  • Thank you kindly - I'm trying to find some patience to apply...

  • Hello Bubblesmum and Tinylon!

So sorry you're both here!! I just wanted to wish you both the best of luck and I'll be sending prayers.
Bubblesmum - that your surgery goes straightforward, without any stress and that there are no further findings post op! I hope you make a quick and full recovery.

Tinylon - that's so frustrating that you have to wait longer! You have to really psych yourselves up for these things, so to have to wait longer is awful! Just try and keep yourself busy and distracted!

I had benign results last Thursday, so stay positive. Xxx

  • Hi Mary,

How did your second biopsy go? Praying you don't have anymore hold ups and you can get your op done and dusted ASAP! Xxx

  • How are you doing Vicki? Have you had the results or your other biopsy yet? I hope you're closer to getting a plan in place and getting this all sorted ASAP! Xxx

  • Hi Linze, how are you?  Just checking my emails and saw your notification.  Thank you so much.

Had second biopsy early this morning it was a bit of a trial tbh.  The radiologist said she was determined to get the calcifications out and she did!  Saw a large cluster of calcs in the sample when they put it up on screen and one single little beggar!  She went in 3 times and I had 2 other radiologists and a Dr in and out.  They certainly gave me the full treatment!  I'm grateful for that but I've got another weeks wait for results - next Wednesday.  What will be will be but I'm scared they will find a higher grade.

Nurse was reassuring but we won't know until then.  I've decided I want to have a mastectomy.  These calcifications seem to be everywhere and I've got 2 clusters.  I can't risk that and whilst I'm scared of surgery I'd rather it came off.  How will they get clear margins, I'm not large busted?!

They haven't given me a date for surgery but with everything to do again I can't see it being for at least another 2 weeks.

I feel a bit more resigned to it all now.  That feeling of sheer panic does seem to be subsiding and I suppose I'm getting used to being in this process.

I'll let you know next week how it goes.  Hope you are okay and everyone else is doing well too, with hopefully some reassuring news.

    xx

  • Hi Linze and hi to you also Mary, I keep reading your updates when I come on here.

So I'm due to get my calcifications biopsy results tomorrow evening. I had a good look at the letter that was sent to my GP following Saturday's consultation. Interestingly my two invasive nodules are described as ill defined,  and I also read that they only showed low grade uptake on the pet ct scan which I believe means they are not classed as aggressive or fast growing. Phew. It also said that if the calcifications biopsy shows it isn't DCIS then I'll have a stereo tactic biopsy. I'd rather not have any further needles in my poor tiny boob! I'm hoping it is not DCIS but a bit of old trauma so we can just concentrate on the two tiny nodules.

How are you doing? What is the next stage for you? Thank you for checking in on us. You are fabulous. Xx

  • Hi Linze16

Thank you for your message. So glad you had a benign result last week. Can't quite believe my op is so nearly here after all the weeks of waiting. Hoping that all you lovely people who are waiting are ok and hanging in there. This is a strange experience for sure. But this forum is a great place to sound off and share thoughts and worries. X

  • Oh bless you Mary,

I would feel the same about the mastectomy!! If my results had gone the other way, I would have pushed for it, regardless of the size. I think I would just want it all gone! I know it's a much bigger surgery, but I think you'll feel more relief after it.
Keep us updated, and I pray this is the end of your investigation and you can get on with scheduling the surgery.
I'm glad to read that you're feeling less anxious and just facing what's to come. That's a great and brave attitude to have, and a fighters spirit!! Keep that going.

    Take care. Xxx

  • Oh that all sounds quite positive, Vicki. Yes let's hope this other area is of no concern! My calcification could have possibly have been from a previous infection, such as mastitis, so there are so many possibilities. I will be thinking of you tomorrow evening, and praying for good results!

The consultant just said that given my mother had breast cancer, he recommended that I have yearly mammograms until age 47, then every 3 years after that. He said I'll get an invite in the post. But he wasn't concerned for now. At least now that I've had my first one, they know what's normal for me.

I hope that like Mary, you are feeling less anxious about what is ahead of you  stay positive and visualise yourself out the other side of this!

Thank you - I'll keep you all in my thoughts and prayers and keep checking in on you all!

    Take care. Xxx

  • Thank you so much.

I've been so calm and I put it all down to daily meditation and visualisations which are just amazing! I'm watching loads of documentaries on healing and meditation etc. Eating well and have a hypnotherapy session booked tomorrow. I'm rocking and rolling with it all!!

So glad you are OK and have been well looked after. Xx

  • Hey Vicki!

Please can I have some of what you're having?!? But seriously, it's so good to hear that you are sounding so positive and dealing with everything so well. Will be thinking of you tomorrow evening and hoping for the best outcome. Then onwards and upwards.

    You've got this! Xx

  • Evening Vicki,

How are you doing? I hope you got some good results from your appointment. Xxx

  • Hi Vicki.

As Linze said....really hope your appointment went well. Thinking of you x

  • Hi lovely ladies. Sorry not to have replied last night. I was so nervous going last night. I think my brain associates the place with just trauma and shock. Anyway I do have confirmed DCIS. God darn it! Ah well, no different than I was told two weeks ago. So I have a mammogram on Saturday morning so they can see the area with the three biopsy points. Then I will be discussed, meet my oncologist and they suspect I will start with chemo first thereafter. My HER 2 is positive so I should respond well to chemo and ill have hormone therapy simultaneously. I just want to nuke the **** out of this stuff now and get on with healing.

Had a mini meltdown last night and cried at the dawning realisation of chemo and hair loss, but I'm back on track today.

How are you both doing and how are you Mary?

  • Hi Vicky,

Well done for getting through all that last evening.  I think everyone was thinking of you.

So they've said you have to have chemotherapy first?  I was wondering why that was with DCIS.  Sorry if I'm not keeping up.

I'm ok thanks and looking forward to a birthday this weekend with all my Kids at home for a change so be nice.

I'm on a waiting game again until next Wednesday when I see the consultant to get my second biopsy results.   I'm hoping these second lot of calcs they found are just DCIS.  I'm pretty resigned to the fact that theyre just not going to be benign.

Hope you get some peace of mind after your news.  You sound amazingly positive.  Well done again.

    Mary xx

  • Hi Mary

So I had read that chemo does not help DCIS, but my consultant told me that it does if you are oestrogen positive which I am. So I guess I have to take his word for it! It also means that if everything shrinks with chemo then they can do more breast conserving surgery I have read. I'm doing a lot of reading!

I hope you have a lovely birthday weekend and can temporarily forget any worries. Hug lots and eat cake! Xxx

  • Oh and sorry, I've realised why you might be confused. So in addition to DCIS I also have confirmed area of invasive. Hence chemo and hormone therapy being first port of call for me most likely. X

  • Ah I see Vicky.  Well now you have a plan I'm sure it will help you focus and stay positive.  I've got small invasive confirmed too so it'll be interesting what they tell me next week.

Are you having any samples sent to that lab in America to get it all genetically tested?  Dammit I can't remember what it's called but I do know someone who is having it done.  Not all NHS trusts do it.  It can give a definitive answer as to whether you need chemo or can get away with just radiotherapy apparently.

The plan this weekend is def to eat cake xx

  • Is that your onco or your onch d score? I know someone who had samples sent to the US, so maybe its the same thing.

So, we are in a similar situation. We will kick cancer's butt together! Xx
