Indeterminate breast calcifications

Hi, has anyone else had this issue?  I went into breast clinic with another lump (I've had numerous fluid filled cysts over the last four years).  That was all fine but they flagged up calcifications on the other side.  I was really shocked.  I've got a biopsy next week and I'm in that horrible inbetween place of not knowing and worrying.  Is this likely to be DCIS?  Thanks x

  • Hi Bubblesmum,

You are very welcome on here.  I'm so sorry to hear you are going through this too, our situations do sound quite similar. This forum has given me a lot of comfort too as this difficult time for us all.

Like you, I'd never heard of DCIS either (or these flippin calcifications).  As you say it's been a couple of months of worry and stress of the unknown.  I'm so pleased to hear that you have your lumpectomy next week and the biopsy stages and waiting for results are all behind you.  Once you are through the surgery you can pat yourself on the back with the finishing line hopefully in sight for getting back to some normality.  Are you having radiotherapy afterwards?

I had some difficult news last week and they've postponed my surgery this Friday.  I got a call from the radiologist saying they had seen another area of calcification after I'd had my magseed put in!  It was a blow!  I've now got to have everything biopsied again on Tuesday morning so I feel a bit one step forward, two steps back at the moment.

It's interesting to hear that you had two different areas of DCIS and that doesn't necessarily mean a mastectomy. I worried about how they could do a lumpectomy on more than one area. My first calcifications showed a tiny 1mm of grade 1 invasive and they didn't mention DCIS, although it's since been suggested that the remaining calcs probably are DCIS.  I will just have to see what the new biopsy shows.

If it is DCIS then I'm told it will be sorted so in that sense you can have some reassurance that whilst this has been an awful time, you will get through it with a good outcome.

All the very best for your surgery on Wednesday.  Let us know how it goes.  X

  • Hi Mary

Thank you for your good wishes. I'm sorry to hear that your surgery has been put back but your team sound very thorough and I'm sure they are doing the right thing with another biopsy. They need a complete picture to give you the best possible treatment and outcome.

My two areas of DCIS are very small - 8 and 11mm but I also have very small boobs - 32B on a good day! My consultant reckons he'll be taking out 20%. I'm a little worried as to what it will look like but more concerned that they may find something else when they analyse it. And yes I do have to have radiotherapy- not sure how many sessions yet.

Am trying to keep as busy as possible in the next couple of days and then have a list or Netflix recommendations to watch. If anyone has any others I'd love to add them to the list! X

  • Hi Bubblesmum.

Welcome to the gang! Not necessarily the kind of gang anyone would want to join but everyone on this chat is so amazing and supportive and in one way or another we all understand what you are going through. The support on here has really helped me.

Really sorry to hear that you have DCIS. That must have been a huge shock. I'm still waiting for my biopsy results so in a slightly different place but appreciate the fear and anxiety you will have been going through these last few months.

I am sending you best wishes ahead of your surgery on Wednesday and hope it goes well.

    Take care x

  • Hi PositiveT

Thank you for your message and good wishes. I think I'm still in denial so Wednesday will be a reality check. I'm more worried about having the wires put in than the lumpectomy as I'll be awake for that part.

Wishing you the very best outcome for your biopsy results. When are they due?

  • Hi!

Getting my results on Friday. Originally had an appointment for today but results weren't going to be back so they moved it. An extra joyful few days of waiting!!

Yeah I think I'd rather they do everything under general haha. Do they put the wires in on the same day as the lumoectomy? Hang in there and will be thinking of you on Wednesday x

  • Hi

Yes the wires go in a couple of hours before the lumpectomy. Trying to do all the jobs around the house that I won't be able to do in the next few days - no ironing next week is a plus! Will let you know how it goes. Good luck for Friday. x

  • Hi, I'm new here and in the same boat as PositiveT. I was supposed to get my results from a Vacuum assisted biopsy tomorrow morning and just had a call to postpone for A WEEK, as 'we can't rush these things' (according to the sweet nurse, who rang). It's absolute torture!

  • Thank you. I will let everyone know how I get on. Keeping everything crossed.

Wishing you all the best for tomorrow. Sounds like you are getting fully prepared to enable yourself time to rest and recover afterwards.

    Take care x

  • Welcome Tinylon.

You're not wrong....waiting is absolutely hellish.

And really sorry to hear you now have to wait for another week. That's ****.

The ladies on here are all fabulous and supportive so feel free to moan, vent, or whatever helps! I've really valued having this forum to share with others who are going through similar and truly understand.

Thank you for sending luck! Right back at you for next week xx

  • Thank you kindly - I'm trying to find some patience to apply...
