Hysteroscopy under GA

Hello everyone,

I started posting on here last year due to suffering pelvic pain and heavy bleeding. This continued for months and I was sent for a transvaginal ultrasound scan and then a hysteroscopy because a uterine polyp measuring 1cm had shown on the scan.

When I went for the hysteroscopy procedure, I was unable to tolerate this and found it painful despite having diazepam and local anaesthetic (I appreciate that everyone is different, so not all people will be the same, please don't worry)

I was advised that I would go on the waiting list for the same procedure under general anaesthetic. Have just heard today that my appointment is next week (Friday 14th Jan) which is good but also a bit scary.

The procedure will allow them to have a look properly and remove the polyp if they can see it, and take a sample for biopsy. I keep reading things online and worrying. It is hard to describe what it feels like, but I have pain inside and sometimes I can feel like a tickle or an itch - is this psychological? Also the bleeding was very heavy for months and now it is more intermittant - is that something to be worried about?

Any advice/experiences welcome, I am feeling quite anxious. Also I have a phobia of being sick so I am worried about the anaesthetic - will it make me sick when I wake up again or do you think they can give me something to prevent this?

Kittie

  • As I noticed your post hasn't got a reply I wanted to stop by to say hello, Kittie.

It's easy to understand why you're a bit scared about the procedure scheduled for next week try to keep your mind off things until then if possible. Also, reading things online might not be such a great idea, there is a ton of unverified information out there that serves no purpose other than to increase our anxieties.

If you find yourself too worried though and feel that speaking with someone medically trained might help, our lovely team of nurses can be reached on this number 0808 800 4040 Monday - Friday between 9a.m - 5p.m.

And if we don't speak before next Friday I want to wish you good luck with your procedure.

    Best wishes,

  • Thankyou Renata, I took your advice and called the helpline to speak with a nurse before my procedure.

Quick update - I was in hospital for the hysteroscopy as planned under GA - everything was fine and I didn't feel sick or anyhting like that.

The only confusing thing now is that they couldn't find the suspected 1cm polyp (that was seen on the transvaginal ultrasound scan) so they took a sample of the tissue anyway for biospy. The discharge paperwork says that I had curettage.

My (new) worry now is why I am having the symptoms of bleeding and pelvic pain if there is no polyp . . .or was there a polyp and where did it go? Also I wonder what the treatment will be as I don't want to take a depo injection or coil.

Sometimes there are no easy answers - only more questions! Has anyone else had similar mystery symptoms or results following hysteroscopy?

    Thanks

  • Hi Kittie I had a failed hysteroscopy yesterday which I had waited 5 weeks for I am just wondering how long you had to wait for the one under  general? I came home so despondant yesterday I was expecting a diagnosis which obv I didnt get . I know every area is different , im just trying to get a rough estimate .

as an aside about 8 years ago I supposedly had a polyp which also had miraculosly disappeared when they went in , I was told sometimes they fall out? I dont know wether I was told that to placate me or if its true .

  • Hello Poppy777

I am sorry to hear that, but also curious about how similar our experiences are. From what I have read online, a polyp can't fall out and doesn't usually disappear on it's own, hence why people need to get checked out. . .  I know that it isn't that easy though, I suppose the scan can only detect so much and the clinician doesn't know until they can see inside properly and take samples for biopsy.

I don't want to upset anyone or add to any confusion as people's situations will be different, but I had the first attempt at hysteroscopy under local anaesthetic in October 2021 and I had my appointment under general anaesthetic last week, so just over 3 months. How long you might wait probably depends which part of the country you are in and how much capacity local hospitals have for elective surgery.

I am trying to stay calm and wait for my results, but I have a lot of anxiety. This is a terrible thing to say, but I am worried that there will be nothing conclusive and I will still have these symptoms and feel that something is very wrong - that is a real possibility and I guess we have to trust health professionals and test results to guide us . . .

Good luck and I hope you can get some answers soon too,

  • Hi, I'm going through the same thing. Just had a biopsy done, now awaiting urgent results it says. I'm terrified in case it's cancer. I'm still bleeding n have pelvic pain, I'm post menopause over 7 yrs

  • Hi Kittie I actually got a call last night  for a pre op on Tues so I dont think I will be waiting too long as I think once you have had a pre op it is only valid for so long . Mine is supposed to be urgent , the outpatient one was supposed to be 2 weeks but ended up being 5 weeks .To be fair I have had 'womens ' issues from being a child . I was very young when I started puberty and ive had issues all my life but never been taken seriously so I gave up complaining in the end . I was so happy to go through the menopause , I thought all my problems were over think I was maybe a tad wrong on that one .

Wishing you well for your results hopefully they will be through quite quickly . The stress is awful I feel like im in no mans land at the minute . I darent make plans for anything .I might go sit in the park today and just watch the world go by if its not too cold .the squirrels are quite entertaining I am really suprised they havent hybernated yet , feel a bit like hybernating myself lol.

Do you have support at home ? I live alone but my daughter is just up the road .Hopefully you will get some answers this time , x

  • UPDATE -

Apologies for the delay and many thanks to everyone on the Forums here who has supported me.

I can confirm that the results from the endometrial biopsy have come back clear/negative.

No polyp was found during the hysteroscopy! (despite this being on previous scan)

I have also been checked for any infections which have come back clear.

Although relieved, I am still experiencing symptoms of sudden heavy bleeding (flooding) and pain on and off. My GP and Gynae are investigating this. At the moment, I am being advised that it is "Dysfunctional Uterine Bleeding" but no obvious cause.

    Thanks again,

  • hi so glad your results came back clear

try not to be too concerned about the 'missing' polyp as they only can guess at it being one from the ultra sound by the colour it shows up as a blob the more water in the mass shows up blacker on an ultra sound so its purely a guess at what the structure is by the colour is presents. If youve had a period since you ultra scan whatever it was could have been easily evacuated then if not attached , and yes polyps have been know to just come out, especially if near the cervix or actually breach the cervix if on a stalk ( sessile) usually after intercourse or tampon use. So this isnt out of the relams of reality either.

The fact that your lining has been tested for atypical hyperplasia and is negative is also great, although statistically even if you get diagnosed with this only about 30% of women with this if left untreated go on to develop cancer of the uterus in the next 20 yrs and if you do have it and have progestrone treatment to thin the lining the odds go down to almost not worrying about.

I would still persue about the bleeding and ask about some blood tests and the actual thickness of the lining of your womb when you had the scan etc >>20mm is considered to be a marker for problems to come.
If you dont get a lot of joy with the dr's you can look into any natural remedies that you might be more inclined to try if you are not keen on progesterone pills or coils etc.
usually heavy bleeding and thickened lining are due to horone imbalance erring on the side of oestrogen dominance, and lack of progesterone. there are ways of lowering your oestrogen levels naturally through supplements of certain vitamins and adjusting your diet, and dr's will always nag you that high oestrogen levels can be made worse by having too much body fat.

I hope your negative results are comforting but i realise you are still actually stuck with the original problem and sometimes people are just so relieved to have got through the tests and the scare of maybe having cancer they then just except the original problem and go off on the thier way out of relief and exhaustion of the whole process.
dont feel you have to put up with heavy bleeding and dont be bullied into taking chemicals etc there is treatment and it should be of a type you feel comfortable with

good luck and take care x

  • Thankyou so much Mandi67 - what a considerate and thoughtful reply!

You are quite right too, I was getting upset when Dr was talking about getting a coil fitted, and my partner actually reminded me that it is my body and my choice about the kind of treatment that I would want to accept, or not . . .seems obvious, but these dilemmas can feel very stressful and out of control.

I will note what you have said also about natural remedies, etc - good points.

    Thanks again
