Lumps in lymph nodes in neck

Hi all

I am new here and worried about my 18yr old son.

He recently found a lump on the left side of his neck, so went to see the GP who checked his bloods. They came back normal and he was referred to ENT. He had a phone call within 24hrs telling him to attend the hospital a few days later.

When he went they felt his lump and placed a camera up his nose to have a look around. They said he had inflammed sinuses and said they would send him for a scan to have the lump checked.

After a 2 week wait he went on the 30th. The young gilr let me go into the scan room with him and said the the consultant would be in to preform the scan. She warned us that he was very abrupt and didnt really speak. Thats not what you want to here is it. Anyway he walked into the room and didnt speak or even say hello. He had no bedside manner at all.

After scanning his left side and pulling faces he moved to the right side where i could see this side looked totally different. I didnt know what i was looking at to be fair but it didnt look right compared to the otherside. He took loads more photos of this side than the otherside where he had found the lump. So we were a little puzzled at why he was taking so long on the good side as we thought.

At the end of the scan he asked if the GP had mentioned what he thought it could be. I said he had said it could be HL and he said good. Strange thing to say and i felt like thats what he thought my son had. He promptly left the room and we didnt know what to do.

He then walked back in and said right im now doing your biopsy....... Total shock and my son's face was terrified. After calming him down he agreed to have it done there and then. Consultant injected Local and then went straight in. No waiting for local to actually work. My son was not happy and said it was killing him. consultant didnt care and carried on. I felt helpless.

Once he finished he said go upstairs and wait for another scan. No conversation to explain at all. So off we went hoping they would explaine when we got upstairs. Once we arrived they had been informed we were coming and that he was having a CT scan with contrast dye. They didnt make him wait long so that was good but my son was very upset that nobody had expalined anything to him and the consultant didnt even want to explain anything. All we know is that the biopsy results can take around 2/3 weeks and i only managed to get him to tell me that before he walked out the door.

So can anyone helps me prepare what might be the next step of the process.

Im guessing the consultant thinks it is HL but i dont know because he wouldnt even say hello or speak.

Any advise would be very greatfull.

  • Hi

I can't offer you any advise as such but just want to let you know of my experience.

I was referred by my GP to haematology for enlarged lymph nodes. It was 5 days from the referral for me to be seen, they then arranged for me to have CT scan and ultrasound with biopsy and they made the follow up appointment for me to get results. She said it would normally be 2 weeks but made it 3 with it being over Christmas.

My follow up is next Tuesday however I have just had the CT scan tonight and I am having the ultrasound on Friday. I am worried that the results won't be back that quickly, but she said I would get the results at the follow up.

I would maybe contact the GP and ask what the next step is. I hope the consultant that you see is not the one who performed the scan! He sounds like he made a difficult/anxious situation even more difficult.

  • Hi thank you for you reply.
we didn't get given a follow up appointment so hopefully they will call and make us one. I can't stand all the waiting.
we were so happy to have everything completed on the same day as it should save lots of time. Just a shame we didn't have a consultant that was happy to talk. I used to work in the NHS and a simple hello and how are you goes a long way. Fingers crossed we won't need to see him again.

I'm so glad you aren't having to wait to long for everything. I really hope you have good news.
it's a horrible situation to be in and not knowing makes things worse.
Have you had a ultrasound yet or will it be your first one on Friday.
I think we were more shocked that he didn't just have one lump. We weren't expecting to find load on the other side of his neck and thyroid.
hopefully we won't have to wait to long.
please let me know how you get on at your follow up appointment. Fingers crossed you have good news hun x

  • The waiting is the worst, even though from seeing the GP to my appointment next week it will have only been 3.5 weeks it has felt like forever. Its so hard to try and not think the worst and go through all of the what ifs. It's good that they did all of his tests at the same time, hopefully that means he will have some results soon. I would definitely chase it up with the GP or ENT and request a follow up.

it will be my first ultrasound on Friday. From what I have read the ultrasound can give them a pretty idea of what is going on there and then. Obviously only the biopsy will tell them what it actually is. It is a shame you had such a poor experience with the consultant, I don't understand people working in that field and having no interpersonal skills.

I will keep in touch, you do too please. I hope you get some correspondence soon. Wishing your son all the best x

  • I don't understand why they do that job with no bedside manner. Your meant to be supportive with patients and he certainly wasn't.
I got the impression from him that he thought it was NHL but I don't know that yet.  I'm just hoping it isn't or is at least very treatable.

it feels like we have been waiting months but it's only been a few weeks since he went to the GP.
hopefully the will ring in the next week and if not I will try and get a follow up appointment.
hopefully your scan will go well and you will have some idea what's going on.

take care and will keep you updated once I know.

  • I would seriously consider complaining about that guy. He needs to be told that being good at the job is more then knowing the medical/technical details.

  • I'm hoping we see someone different for the follow up. I don't even know that consultants name as he didn't even introduce himself.
I will find out his name tho and complain as it wasn't a very nice experience and I can only imagine how he would actually give patients bad news.
He was extremely good at his job and I'm very grateful for that but he shouldn't behave that way with patients.
