PSA level of 156 with chronic back and hip pain

Hi, I don't really know how to word any of this but please bare with me.

My Dad is 56 and has been struggling to pass urine, he has had a mild hip 'ache' for around a year, and Christmas Eve we got a call to say his PSA levels were 156, the oncologist said it can't be anything other than cancer at this level.

My Dad has also in the last few days got chronic lower back pain and is barely able to do anything at all.

We are awaiting a CT scan, but I'm just absolutely devastated. I have 2 young children who are his best friends and I can't even look at them or my Dad without feeling like my heart has been shattered.

i don't really know what I want to ask but I wondered if anyone had any similar stories? Good and bad. I want to know what's happening. His GP said he's never seen PSA so high in his career.

I wish to add his prostate was enlarged on examination but not lumpy?

Thank you, Katherine.

  • Hi Katherine , you've worded everything fine,. Welcome to the form the club nobody wants to join.

I've got prostate cancer gone to lymph nodes spine ribs pelvis and a lung PSA 1580 i was diagnosed Feb 2016

I started on hormone therapy, then with it going other places chemotherapy I've still got Cancer it's just being controlled my latest PSA was 0.04 .I kept working for 2years after diagnosis,(metal fabrication and welding firm) then had to retire (67 years old) to look after my wife she was diagnosed with Alzheimer's and Parkinson's plus other problems,im her carer now.

I've sent a message to [@telemando]‍  and [@woodworm]‍  they had similar problems but lower PSA .

If i can help please ask , hopefully others will join you soon, you never know this time of year .

    Best wishes Billy

  • Thank you so much for your response Billy. It gives me some hope that me and my children aren't going to loose him just yet thank you and I hope you are well.

I know it's a personal question but did you prostate examine smooth or bumpy? I'm just thrown off by that.

  • Hi my prostate was normal apart from being a bit enlarged but smooth, dispite cancer all over, normally its bigger and lumpy, its the cancer sells expanding .i didn't have any aches or pains just sickness daily and while having tests something else showed up hence PSA Tests , sickness turned out to be a hiatus hernia.

  • Gosh how scary that you can have it all over with no symptoms. You have given me some hope tonight though thank you.
