Diagnosed with throat cancer Petrified !

Hi chat room,  never done this before but I start radiotherapy tomorrow and the thing that scares me the most is the mask,  I had a lump on my throat two an a half cm, had that removed 4 weeks ago , I'm pretty sure doc said it was stage 2 , I'm pretty useless at asking questions. I have to have a tube fitted to my stomach on the 20th of this month. I have to have the treatment both sides but mainly the right side. I really don't know what I'm supposed to ask ! Weirdly enough I feel a bit better just writing this. Can I just say the thing is I feel so well no pain or anything ‍♀️Thankyou for listening

Debbie

  • Hi Debbie

am sorry to hear of your diagnosis and you will find plenty of support and advice on here as you go through your journey of treatment and recovery.
Understand there is a lot to take in and facing the unknown. The success rates of this type of cancer is reaelly high and while the treatment/recovery brings its challenges there is light at the end of the tunnel as I often quote.
I have posted a link to my blog which will hoipefully put some persepctive into the journey and hope this gives you some informed information and tips.
On the mask itself , I like yuourself was dreading as I am clautrophobic but I got through it fine.
It doesnt take long to make and it is only on for a very short space of time (minutes) each day of radiotherpy and you get through it.
I have posted a link to my blog and hope helps give you some perspective of potential journey and I also outline a little about the mask.
Try and stay as positive as you can and let me know if I can help in any way

  • Thankyou Ian, your account of your experience was extremely helpful with many tips that I have noted. I will try to remain positive. Just one thing I think you said that 30 was the body's limit but I'm down for 7 weeks radiotherapy is that normal as well   Thankyou Ian for listening and good luck with your continued recovery.

  • Hi Debbie

On the doses, my undertsanding is that 6/7 weeks was the max and thought around 6 was the norm, but you are in safe hands with NHS and they will have scientifically mapped out your radiation plan and if over a 7 week period will be fine. All very scienfifically exact now and amazing on the advancement in technology in this area.
I agree that you sometimes dont know what to ask or forget or have limited time with consultant etc.

If you have any specific questions, I would write them down and take to your appointments and the support team, in my experience are invaluable when it comes to things like medication, diet, side effects and helping you through any issues you may have. That said they still have limited time and these threads are really helpful as you can tap into many others experince on here who have been in your circumstance and fully understand what you will ben going through.
I also started a thread on here that is still active and there are many of us who helped each other, shared experinces and tips and this has helped so many others along the way

If you want to pour through of have a genral look at some of the comments and replies its called "Radiotherapy for Throat Cancer" and under Living with cancer and I started this under the name Anchor 1707.

Please keep in touch with progress and let me know if I can help in anyway at any time

    regards
    Ian
