re prostate biopsy

Now decision time. Had mri ,ct, and pet scans over the lst 2 months. I now  have an appointment booked for Oct. My decision as to whether I go for it or not. Have read about bad side effects incontinence etc. My psa was 22. Have been told it is cancer, but they just want to comfirm. They say it has not gone outside. Just dont know what to do .

  • Hi there.  Wanted to give my father's experience.  He is 68 and has been passing blood in his urine and at times clots since July 2020.  He was told he had an enlarged prostate and was referred to the urology department.  He had multiple CT/MRI scans since last August which we think concentrated on his prostate.  His PSA was 21 at one stage and he was started on a medication to try to reduce that.  He had a camera test which showed a very enlarged prostate which had many blood vessels that seemed to bleed easily during this test.  Forward to this year and more tests which started to move upwards as and my father has cancer in his bladder and kidney which is aggressive, but none in his prostate which I think was a shock.  Unfortunately my father has yet to have any treatment as we are now looking at grade 4 cancer and he is in hospital next week for a brain scan.  If only they had looked further up at the start this may have been caught....

  • Hi I had 12 samples taken 6 from left and 6 right u had slight pain when first sample taken for couple of hours after a little bleeding for a day,no other problems at all,no incontinence or infection my PSA was taken weeks before 1580 so I already knew it was cancer it was just to help with grading and stage, that was February 2016 .. good luck whatever you choose.

  • thanks for that billygoat I think I will go ahead  with biopsy.

  • thanks for that imformation, I think I will go ahead with biopsy. Hope all is well with your father.

  • RE the biopsy my father's was actually done under general because he was having his bladder biopsied at the same time.  His recover was absolutely fine though, as Billygoattt said there were multiple samples taken from the prostate.  Dad had a catheter and was kept in hospital for 3 days but I think that was more to do with it being a general and the catheter was due to the bladder biopsy.  Best of luck.

  • thanks for info. This is a very helpful site.  Once again , thankyou.
