Lung Cancer

Hi all

just wanted to introduce myself

my mum has just been diagnosed with stage 4 lung cancer she hasn't had any symptoms other than a pain in her back

it's happened quite quickly scan and biopsy last week she has a pancoast tumour T4N1MC1 small cell lung cancer which they have said is in a couple of places in her back and shadowing on her hip

Just wanting to speak to others who have or are going through lung cancer treatment she's waiting for some final biopsy results but they have said probably chemo every 3 weeks and also some radiotherapy

  • Welcome to our friendly forum.  Wife of stage 4 lung cancer husband and kept a daily blog since after diagnosis now over four years, so if you need advice or help I'm here.  Carol

  • Hi Carol

Thank you ️ That's really refreshing to know as other than this pain she isn't ill

shes 75 and in good health no other underlying conditions they rushed her through for a biopsy last week and we went today they said it's extensive but they can offer palliative chemo I guess I'd like to have more info on what this may do to her health as she's well in herself she walks eats well doesn't smoke or drink and other than the pain in her back is fine I don't want her to have chemo and be ill and take away quality of life bit if she does have it how much longer would this give her

ee only lost my dad five years ago and he had chemo and was really ill x

  • Chemo is hard, Norman wasn't ill either just a niggly cough, he's now 75 as well.  But do you want quality of life or quantity, it was so hard and kills your immunity so every illness is worse, then it's radiotherapy as well and keeping away from everyone so you don't catch anything from them.  He's now on immunotherapy which is kinder but still every three weeks.  Tough decisions to be made and a lot to consider.  My decision was to do whatever my husband decides.  Carol

  • I think mum will give the first lot a go but if she's then Ill I don't think she will have anymore x it's her choice at the end of the day x

  • Hi Kbfox and Carol,

My dad has had exactly same diagnosis stage 4 lung cancer with shadow on hip and as he describes them 'spots on bones. '

He begins chemo this Friday with immunotherapy. Every 3 weeks.

I'm nervous but he's ready to fight a strong man. He's 61 and good health too. They said in 2 years they will review his treatment put him on other plans if need be. They said there is so much treatment available for him. (Hopeful)

It's terrifying I'm so close to my dad. So I'm always looking for advice etc. First time on here. But I had to reply when I seen your posts

Thinking of you both. Its so incredibly hard xxx

  • Hi

I just wanted to say hi. My Dad has also just been diagnosed with Lung Cancer which is in his Liver and on his Spine. Aside from his leg pain, you wouldn't know he was "ill". It was a shock to us all and the last 3 weeks of waiting has been hell.

He saw the Respiratory Consultant on Monday to confirm he will start chemotherapy next week and has his first Oncology appointment on Friday. I assume we will have more information on Friday. My Mum thinks the consultant said it's Small Cell Lung Cancer, which I'm even more petrified of now as I'm not sure there is as much treatment to be offered for Small Cell, and like yourself, have the worry of the effects from chemotherapy.

This forum has helped me through the last few weeks, it's good to talk.

I wish your Mum all the best, and I have read everywhere that a healthy positive mind is key to a good recovery, which I'm trying to instil in my Dad as he is a little down at the moment.

Make sure you look after yourself also. All the very best.

    Lucie x

  • Hi all of you. I've been dealing with this for four years and have been through every emotion available!  If you want to read my way of coping have a look at Dor06 it's helped a lot of others even with other cancers. Love and good luck to you all in coping with it. Carol x

  • Hi KBfox1,

My Dad has also just been diagnosed with lung cancer today, after around two weeks of tests. Aside from being anemic & tiredness/shortage of breath, you wouldn't know there was anything wrong.

He's 74 and unfortunuately smoked all of his life, so he was expecting the worst as he also had known lung issues, but at this point in time we don't know what the overall stage is. Basically we know it's covered 1/3 of the left lung & a very small section of the right. Doing lymph node biopsy next-up and then we can work something out and see where we can go.

Best of luck to your Mother :)
