Just been diagnosed with skin cancer. Trying to take it in

Hi still trying to get my head around my skin cancer diagnosis. Been told for the last 2 years it was just a mole.

  • Hello Macey19,

A warm welcome to our forum. I am so sorry to hear you have been diagnosed with skin cancer after being told for 2 years it was just a mole.

You've come to the right place to meet others who have been affected by melanoma skin cancer and you can find more information about it on this page. I thought I would also mention the lovely [@AngieT]‍ who has extensive experience of melanoma and would be a great person for you to chat to here.

If you have any questions following your diagnosis, our nurses are only a free phone call away so don't hesitate to ring them on 0808 800 4040 - their line is open Monday to Friday from 9am to 5pm.

I will now let our members come and say hello and share their story with you.

    Best wishes,

  • Hi Macey,

I'm sorry you have just received this diagnosis and have only just received it after 2 years of seeking medical attention. It will take some time for the news to settle in and you will then think of questions to ask.

Have you just had the results after an excision biopsy? Have they told you what stage and/or depth of the melanoma? You will now be given a Wide Local Excision (WLE) and (depending on the depth) the option of a Sentinel Lymph Node Biopsy (SLNB). I have sent you a friend request so that we can chat by private message if you would like.

It will be a worrying time for you but please know that treatments for melanoma are moving apace and showing great promise so the future isn't as bleak as you may fear.

Angie (Stage 3 melanoma patient since 2009)
