Just told over the phone I have breast cancer

I was recalled after a routine mammogram and had some small calcification.  Had 2 biopsy last week and they just called with results to say its cancer and will refer me to oncologist. Gutted!! I'm 51 and a single mother to 6 year old twins. Scared to tell people especially my mum and scared how I will cope..

  • Hello @Merlincat

I am so sorry to hear you have received this news, you must be so shocked right now.

There are some lovely supportive people on here along with nurses and it may be a help to call Macmillan and talk to someone there.

I am 50 and have a clinic appointment on Saturday after my doctor found a lump. I have an 8 year old boy who is my world so I know how you will feel about your children, they will get you through the days with their love and smiles.

    Sending support and good wishes.

  • @lou1511 thankyou for your response good luck  on Saturday x

  • So sorry to hear of your diagnosis it can be a very unsettling time.  I was where you are 3 months ago and know too well the fear you are feeling.  Firstly, you will cope, there is so much practical and emotional help available.

One of the things I wished I'd known when first diagnosed is that breast  cancer is not a one for all treatment, biopsies are needed to determine the grade, stage and receptors of the tumour/leison, these all need to be known to provide the correct targeted treatment for you, however this can take time which can heighten anxieties and fear.   Once this information is known the professionals will be able to talk to you about your treatment options, having a treatment plan will help you feel a lot better about what comes next.

You will get through this x

  • I'm so sorry to hear your diagnosis. Such a horrible thing. I was diagnosed in January with breast cancer and I'm now halfway through chemotherapy.

You will get past this and once you know more and have your treatment plan you'll feel as though your on the right track. Trust your treatment team and there is so much support out there if you need it. You will get through this.

  • Hi merlincat. I was also told, in my case rather brutly over the phone, 'you have adavanced metastatic prostate cancer & you have  a life expectancy of 3-5 yrs'! But take a big breath, cry a lot even shout at the world. Then sit & breath again. Trust yourself & family & friends, talk honestly with them. Nowadays we can pull through this. I have a neurological condition so can't have chemo etc., but the hoemone jabs are holding it down, So fingers crossed & lets hope the treatment works as well for you as for 2 close friends of mine that had your diagnois 10 yrs ago. I wish you well, stay safe & strong.
