Lung cancer

Hi, I was hoping for some experience and guidance and also I suppose, support as right now I feel very alone and afraid. Last week my amazing mum was diagnosed with stage IV advanced lung cancer that has spread and so cannot be cured but palliative chemo may be available to help with her symptoms. Today she had a biopsy to determine which cancer she has so they can treat it the best way for her. We’ve been told she will find out the results within 10 days. My mum is already poorly, she started around 7 weeks ago with hoarseness of voice, she’s lost so much weight and has completely lost her appetite. She is now suffering with awful back pain and the nausea is 24/7 although she is never sick, but brings up a lot of what we suspect is fluid off her lungs. Her get up and go has gone and my heart breaks for her. How can I help her? I would rather know how long we have left with her so we can treasure every moment then wonder is this it!?!  The not knowing is awful. Has anyone else dealt with this? Thankyou for taking your time to read this.

  • My mum has been diagnosed with lung cancer and possibly bone cancer awaiting results. I lost my dad to bone cancer and prostate cancer 6 years ago.

the worst part is seeing my mum who was so full of energy and get up and go to be reduced to someone struggling to walk around the house. She has lost 1 1/2 stone in three months she now weighs six stone. The advice I would offer is spend quality time and show how much they mean to you. If offered dia-morphine try and keep them to the very minimum and if possible keep them off it. Paracetamol is far better as it enables them to think clearly. Offer their favourite foods little and often with my mum it's tomatoes and jacket potatoes (she magaes 1/2 a potato a night. In the day a soft finger sized country slice cake. In the morning three spoonfuls of hot porridge I use full fat jersey gold milk. On the potatoes lots of butter.
give lots of comfort and physical contact. See the person not the disease.

    best wishes

  • Thankyou for your replies, sadly my mum passed away on 5th April 2021. It was very peaceful and we were with her. She had a lot of complications once she had been diagnosed. She was diagnosed on the 4 th March so everything happened really quick. But she was at home with her dogs and myself and my sister. Thankyou for your kind response s xx
