Lung cancer

Hi, I was hoping for some experience and guidance and also I suppose, support as right now I feel very alone and afraid. Last week my amazing mum was diagnosed with stage IV advanced lung cancer that has spread and so cannot be cured but palliative chemo may be available to help with her symptoms. Today she had a biopsy to determine which cancer she has so they can treat it the best way for her. We’ve been told she will find out the results within 10 days. My mum is already poorly, she started around 7 weeks ago with hoarseness of voice, she’s lost so much weight and has completely lost her appetite. She is now suffering with awful back pain and the nausea is 24/7 although she is never sick, but brings up a lot of what we suspect is fluid off her lungs. Her get up and go has gone and my heart breaks for her. How can I help her? I would rather know how long we have left with her so we can treasure every moment then wonder is this it!?!  The not knowing is awful. Has anyone else dealt with this? Thankyou for taking your time to read this.

  • Hi Lindseylou

I'm so sorry to  hear about your Mum, and that you are feeling alone and afraid. I've just come on the site for the first time today - my dad has just got home from his first session of chemo. He has lung cancer. I can't offer experienc or guidance really, but I'm going through what you are going through so hope I can offer a bit of support.

Dad has felt a lot better since they drained litres of fluid off his lungs last week, so hopefully your mum can have that done soon.

I just try and be really positive for my dad.  Try to make him smile and laugh and think about the good times - usually via Facetime as I live miles from him. When I have been to stay I've treid to keep him occupied.

Dad's chemo is palliative, they can't cure him. Without the chemo he's been told he'd have a couple of months but the doctors won't say - understandably - how much longer the chemo will give him. I'm not sure I want to know anyway. I'm just treasuring each day he is here, and thinking positively.

I'd say talk openly about your fears to friends and family - you need support as well as your mum - but brave face on for your mum.

Sorry, this is probably no help at all...but my thoughts and prayers are with you.

  • Hi sorry too trouble you but my dad also as stage 4 lung cancer and all our options have gone out the window apart from a chemotherapy pemetrexed/carboplatin  I'm so scared of him having this as at the moment hes fit and well and still going about his own business "walking his dog and playing pool "  hes 83 yr old .is this the drug your father is having ? Thank you for your time x

  • Hi

So sorry to hear about your Dad. My Dad is taking carboplatin (i/v) and etoposide (i/v and orall). Dad hasn't reacted too badly all things considered He gets very tired a few days after having chemo,  his hair is thinning and he gets terrible constipation for a few days but he only has chemo every three weeks so he can easily put up with these side effects because (touch wood) he is feeling so much better than before he had chemo. Hope this helps and good luck!

  • Hi thank you for taken the time to get bk to me , ooh bless your father  glad too hear his treatment is going ok , that must be such a relief for you could I ask how old your father is if you dont mind,  my dad is 83 and just dont feel is fare too take his quality of life away (does that make sense).

  • HI.

    He's 81 and a half.

Yes, makes total sense. I guess you need to think about if chemo will extend his life and still give him a reasonable quality of life. Unfortunately they don't seem to know how chemo will affect each individual - think my dad has been reasonably lucky, although the tiredness after each does is definitely getting worse the more doses he has. But he is defintely pleased he decided to go for the chemo, especially as when he had his last scan the tumour hadn't grown (which is as much as they said the chemo would do, it woudn't be able to get rid of it)

  • Hi , yeah I'm going to sit down with him and talk about the options with him and try to stay positive.. yeah sounds like my dads because it cant be cured just keep it at bay .. thank you for helping me just makes me feel that I'm not alone at this horrible time x
