Bosniak 3 and nephrectomy

Hello, I was diagnosed with a Bosniak 3 cyst on my right kidney last week.  This was discovered incidentally following an ultrasound for stomach pain, my kidneys are thankfully not causing any symptoms. I had a CT scan from which they diagnosed the cyst and my consultant has ordered an MRI for a better look.  He said the best way forward is to have a nephrectomy. Does anybody here have experience of a Bosniak cyst? Has anybody had a partial or whole nephrectomy? I am keen to know how recovery was, how you felt afterwards, how independent you were in self care and daily needs in the early days? This discovery was quite a shock and it is taking me some time to adjust to the news.  Any feedback would be appreciated. Sorry I posted this in the wrong forum I meant to post it in newly diagnosed!

  • Hello SR68

I'm sorry to hear about your recent diagnosis. It's understandably a difficult time whilst you're waiting for the next steps.

I've had a look through the forum and I can see that [@Jemma79]‍ recently posted here after being diagnosed with Bosniak IV. As I've tagged her into this reply she may see your post and reply.

We don't have any other recent posts where Bosniak has been mentioned so I'd recommend having a look at the Kidney Cancer Support Network where I'm sure you'll be able to connect with others who have been through similar diagnosis and surgery.

If you'd like to talk things through with one of our nurses you're most welcome to give them a call. they're available Monday to Friday 9 am to 5 pm on 0808 800 4040.

    I hope this helps.

    Best wishes,

  • Thank you for the information, I really appreciate it.  I have reached out to Jemma and will follow up on the sign post you offered x

  • Hello I was diagnosed with a Bosniak 3 cyst back in august. I had a bad mountain bike crash and during the MRI scan on my body they picked up the tumour, from the crash I broke 6 ribs and punctured my lung so I was in a lot of pain with this so it took a while to recover. I finally got my call for a robotic partial nephrectomy surgery, I had this on January 14th at hospital, I had 7 small incisions on my abdomen where they entered my body, these healed fast and well approx 1 inch long, the operation was a success and they removed the cyst and part of my kidney. One thing about the operation I will say, I hope you don't have trapped c02, they use this to blow up your body to create more room to operate. I had a really bad pain in my shoulder due to this and was in agony, peppermint water was good to relieve it. As for the operation I was in pain for a few days and slowly feeling better,I left hospital 24 hrs after the operation but looking back I should of state in longer, definitely another day or 2,  I set myself small targets each day when I got out of hospital, walk further each day and push myself. Each week you feel better and better, 3 weeks in I was walking 5 miles for long walks, week 4 lifting light weights and training on x trainer, week 5 felt 100%. Today in my 6th week of recovery I got my biopsy results confirming it was cancer, it's been a strange day but they confirmed it was all removed it hadn't spread anywhere and they had clear margins. I'm very grateful it was found early and lucky to have the surgery.   If you have any further questions I will gladly assist.

  • Hi SR68.  Sorry to hear about your diagnosis, have you had any further news or action taken.

I was told 2 weeks ago after having an ultrasound on my pelvic that I had a 4.1cm cyst with several separations on my right kidney.  I've not shown any symptoms and this is a shock.  I have a CT scan booked for 9th April so not sure what Bosniak group I will fit in yet.  Would really love to hear the rest of your story on this if you are up to sharing.  Thanks

  • Hi.  [@stevemoz]‍
sorry to hear your diagnosis but glad they managed to get it all.  What's your follow up plan, if you don't mind me asking?

  • I have had video call with my surgeon stating everything was a success and have been handed over to my local hospital for a cancer screening program for 3-5 years dependant on what they find. I have my first scan booked in June, other than that I have made a full recovery and enjoying life again.

  • Thanks for the reply, glad to hear you are well.  I wish you all the best for your future check ups.

  • I hope you have the same outcome and you can put it all behind you. Good luck and try to be as possitive as you can.
