Bowel cancer

Hi there I have just been diagnosed with bowel cancer I had a colonoscopy Ct and MRI scan over the past 2 weeks I am waiting to find out what my treatment plan will be . Anxious times is anyone else going through the same on here ?

  • Hi I am so sorry to hear about your diagnoses,I know it's scary and the wait is the worse. My dad was recently diagnosed with bowel cancer which has Metastasized to the liver and also was diagnosed with prostate cancer.I have devastated at this diagnosis but over the last couple of weeks I have spoke to many people that are still here 10years on after first diagnosis. It has made me so hopeful.Treatment is so advanced these days that it is amazing at what they can do.My dad is due to have 3months of chemo and just had his port fitted and of the liver tumours shrink he will then go on to have major surgery on the bowel and liver.Try to stay positive and stay active keep living.Cancer does not define you,you are strong and you have all the fight in you.If you need to talk feel free to message me.I will keep you in my thoughts.Stay strong you have got this x

  • Hi there

thank you for replying and for your positive words . I think it is the shock of it all and the fact that it's the unknown , you think you are fairly healthy and I have always been a happy and positive person so you think that it will never come my way !! I hope your Dad is coping with the treatment please let me know how he gets on and if he has any tips to share on his journey . Stay strong for your Dad and thank you xxx

  • It is so scary when you are told that news,You never think it will come knocking on your own Doorstep.I think the best advice I gave to my dad was to speak up don't bottle up emotions. It is ok with to be scared and frightenined but he didn't need to feel alone in any of this that he had so much support. We have had alot of tears,He needed alot or reassurance that he wasn't going to die.I have gone to every one of his hospital appointments and I ask all the questions.I can advise you to ask every question you can think of and don't be afraid to ask anything you are unsure about. My dad is going to be on folfox chemo and the treatment is very tolerable. No hair loss etc.Is your cancer only in the bowel?I know the main treatment plan for that is surgery and amazing results, some people need chemo in case it has spread through the bowel muscle etc.I have started my dad on multivitamins to boost his immune system and Iron tablets as he needed blood transfusions due to his tumour bleeding.Just remember you are not alone in this and you will live, you are strong and a fighter and as soon as you have treatment started that is half the battle all you need to do is stay positive and let your body fight xx

  • Hi there thank you I will know more next week as I will be told the results from the scans and if it has spread or not . Please keep in touch and let me know how your Dad gets on , it is hard for families to also go through as they feel helpless.
I feel positive at the minute but I am sure I will have some bad days to come but will grit my teeth and get on with it like others are already doing I am lucky to have a great family and supportive partner .

    thank you

  • Hi, I'm awaiting a diagnosis for bowel cancer, I backed out of a colonoscopy and gastroscopy early Jan as I thought the whole experience was traumatic, I feel in despair now as I've since had a CT scan and MRI scan, found a nodual in my liver and adrenal gland, I just don't know what to think I'm going out of my mind with worry, since booked another endoscopy as I need to know one way or the other dreading it tbh.

  • Hi there

bless you I nearly backed out of the colonoscopy and was made to go by my partner so glad I went , as it wasn't as bad as I thought . What symptoms do you have ?
have you been told you have bowel cancer ?
The staff at the hospital are so patient you will be fine . Why are you having an endoscopy when you have had CT and MRI can you not just have a colonoscopy?

    take care

  • Hi Amanda,

Thanks for your reply, I have to have an endoscope as they want to take a biopsy as I lost alot of weight, it all started last year with terrific pain in my lower back other than that I felt well at the time but went to docs to check it out as my legs was so weak, they did tests and found I was bleeding from my back passage. Since then I got worse pain in groin back can't breath well pain in chest but some days I feel better than others. Is this cancer ? I haven't a clue which is mainly the reason I joined this chat I just want answers as I feel I'm going mad with worry.

  • Hi there

I think the waiting to hear is so difficult as you google everything and your thoughts go into overtime, it's a scary time but we will cope when or if we have to .

let me know how everything goes

  • Hi,

I've been searching the web high and low and joined this forum so I could reply to you. I unfortunately are in the same boat, I've just had a colonoscopy which showed I have a tumour on my rectum. I go for a CT on Monday and awaiting an appointment for the MRI then it'll be another wait before I learn my fate. I've convinced myself it's stage 4 and I'm going to die. I can't eat or drink. I'm just so upset I have children and not seeing them grow up is killing me. Sorry to be negative but I've never felt so low in all my life.

    How are you doing? x

  • Hi there

sorry to hear you are also going through this as well . You will cope with it all stage by stage and get through all that it throws at you . I also worried and found it hard to sleep but am now taking herbal sleep supplements that have helped . My cancer has spread to liver and utretha and cervix and am going to start chemo soon then they will see about hanging operations later on . We just have to take each day at a time and we will get better but it will be a tough journey ahead xxx take care and let me know how you get on x
