Tonsil Cancer - Whirlwind Week

Hi All

Firstly Hats Off to the NHS in Wales, they have been super amazing since my diagnosis on New Years Eve. Thank you all

The title of the post is Whirlwind Week and this is why:

New Years Eve I have a phone call from ENT confirming tonsil cancer.  Very apologetic confirmed over the phone.  Wants me in for a biopsy.   Later the same day I get calls from ward team and covid test centre booking appointments.

Monday 4th January i have a covid test at 9.30am. Results back same day, negative for Covid19.  On route to test centre call from pre assessment team asking me to go in straight after my covid test for my biopsy pre assessment.   Forgot to mention biopsy booked for 7th January.

Tuesday 5th January have an ultrasound at 9.30am and an MRI ar 11.00am.  The ultrasound was an external ultrasound of my neck. They decided to take two needle biopsies of lymph nodes which took some doing as the nodes were so solid they couldn't get needle in... Thank goodness for local anesthetic :)

From ultrasound they decided to send me for a 3d scan of my jaw.  This was done primarily in case I need any teeth removed pre radiotherapy treatment.  Apparently radiotherapy can cause your back teeth to crumble.  Don't panic not everyone has this done.  i believe it totally depends on size, position of tumour and the amount of radiotherapy you need.

After the jaw scan I went straight for my MRI.  Think I  had two 10 minute sessions,  the second 10 with dye injected into my blood.  I had also had this done for a CT scan on 18th December.

Wednesday 6th January day off.  Which I used to eat as many nice things as possible :)

Thursday 7th January 07.30am its minus 4 degrees c and I'm back at the hospital with my overnight bag ready for another biopsy, I was told to expect to be in hospital overnight.  Due to covid we have to wait at the entrance.  Just 3 of us, asked lots of covid related questions and temperature checked before being escorted to the clean ward.

The ENT surgeon comes to see me to explain the procedure.  Remember everyone is different.   So for me they are going to remove the good tonsil and send it for tests.  What? Not the bad tonsil?  The reason for this is because when you have cancer in one tonsil it is pretty much a done deal that you will get itin the other.   Also by leaving the cancerous tonsil in it allows for more treatment options.  If they cut it out there will only be one treatment path.

During the tonsillectomy they also took biopsies of my bad tonsil and my tongue.   After the op ENT told me that it would take about 7 days for the results so they expect to be calling my Wife and I in a week on Wednesday.

I was allowed to go home as long as I had eaten something, drunk something and had a pee.  I was home by 7pm the same day.

Sunday 10th January its 6am and I am sat in bed writing this post.  Next to me is a glass of water which I sip all night, my 6am pills and a lip balm.  My bottom lip took a battering during surgery and is very swollen and sore.   The cancerous side of my throat and shoulder is still painful and the right side is even more painful from the tonsillectomy.  Even my lymph nodes seem to be complaining  :)

But you know what, I don't feel sorry for myself,  I don't feel sad.  I'm going to lose weight, but hey I'm 5ft 6inch and 13 and a half stone (male) i could do with shedding a few pounds ;)

I know this is just the start of a long hard journey,  but I'm ready... bring it on I say!

  • morning - definately cooler so watching someone eating the hottest chicken wings lol

hubby has had to put on a sweat chirt hahaha and he hardly ever wears anything thicker than T shirt.

off to hospital today not for neck but spine this time lol will be interesting to hear what they have to say about my spinal stenosis. hve decided will probably still wear masks even after the 19th dont trust the rate of infection and cannot afford to catch anything.

crocs went home yesterday after having a great time with the mini mafia. surorising really that they both get on but it takes all sorts. they had a good sending off everyone cheering and hugging each other and the crocs even invited the mini mafia over to America at some point. After  a bit of spluttering and black smoke from the camper van exhaust the crocodiles left leaving the mini mafia laughing and coughing in the fumes.

    keep smiling x

promises to be nice today the weather is so unpredictable so i suggest we all enjoy what we can!!

already had a sit outside getting the rays - lovely.

well got CT scan date for 22nd and agreed to have more injections in spine before opting for operation.

time to start trying a job a day again in preparation for work - the idea makes me sink lol dreading having to cope for 6 hours on the trott. - needs a boost up the back side lol - like the fireworks that go fizz all over the place!

now got three hedgehogs back in my care - this is good preparation lol. two have been attacked in the disabled garden by rats i suspect and have got cuts and abscesses so i had to clean them all up yesterday and give antibiotics. then i have a little baby called Terry who we arre having to half syringe feed because he is wee only 121g up 9g since yesterday. he is absolutely adorable and cute so fingers crossed. was not aiming to have any but our co founder is on holiday and one of the hogs was one i had previously looked after called Bigfoot, the other is a frisky girl we have called Wendy. we have madde up a big pen for those two with logs, a roll of grass turf, and igloo houses.

    of for a rest.

  • morning, lovely day again so we have been outside already with the dogs and caught some rays!! going to watch wimbledon later and just relax.

the mini mafia have also ccaught the wimbledon fever, the girls have their little white dresses and the boys arre in their shirts and they are hitting their rackets around, trouble is no one is any good so the balls are going all over the place, one even dented a cars windscreen, another a green house thankully the humans are just prsuming it is cars flicking up pebbles!! so the mini mafia think its quite hilarious much to the disgust of the parents who are trying to bring them up properly!! kids will be kids!!

keep saffe and keep smiling xx

  • what a sticky morning !! it cannot make its mind up.

good news baby Terry is doing well and ate reasonably well lat night so pleased hes gained 17g!! slow and sure!!

Bigfoot is getting there but being a fiesty little man lol decided he did not want injections last night - not that i can blame him probably remembering lasttime. wendy took things in her sttride which s good.

keep smiling and have a good day x

  • morning - weather has changed again a lot cooler todday lol. does not know what it wants to do lol. a bit like me this morning!!!

mini mafia had a pool party last night - they all got into their swimming cossies and went to the large puddle down the road which is a bit like a lake to them for a midnight splash and BBQ at the beach edeg. they had grilled worms and more corn with lots of lemonade - alcohol banned as they get too over board on it and no one wanted any drownings!! (especially with children around). the show of group were habving races to see how many laps they could do, the toungsters just splashed at the edges and the slightly older ones had their rubber rings on and arm bands and were swimming slowly up to the centre and back. the parents sat and did their usual mother chats and the dads played basket ball. it was fun.

hubby is already had collie wobbles about the game tonight and being a bit over optimistic!! i am more looking forward to the mens wimbledon!!

have a good day keep smiling x

  • Morning

Glad to hear the mini mafia had a good time and there were no accidents at the pool party lol, hope your ok Elona and the lumps not causing to much trouble, sounds like you hubby looking forward to the football later I must admit I enjoyed watching the last game my son and daughter watched it to and there was much shouting at the tv, all ok with me blisters still in mouth so still sore but throat a lot better thankfully, starting to worry a bit if the treatment has worked and what next if it hasn't but no point going there have to be positive, hope everyone is doing well take care

    Allison x

  • morning all

Glad to hear your ok Allison, try not to worry if your mouth is feeling better must be a good sign, the blisters will probably take some time to go I imagine - the important thing is to remain positive so you dont get stressed and go backwards. How long until you have your follow up??

hubby got over the disappointment of the footie failry quickly because he said we did not play well so really didnt deserve to win although he said you could say they had a draw since they were both one all and not to count penalties.

i find things very difficult with chronic fatigue and have to try and work out how to cope becuse i have to go back to work in three to four weeks time.

i have been putting out food for the outside hogs and i think next doors cat has also been heloing herself lol because she has been leaving me presents next to the bowl!! these have been throw. into field for fox so hopefully also acting as deterrent for mini mafia. (think they have nticed as therre is a big red cross marking the area and only the thrill seekers are venturing across!

    take care keep smiling. x

  • morning

hope everyone is getting on ok and enjying the weather. Pedro is loving having me at home at the moment he goes intot he garden loads of times - of course on his terms - however, the pigeons were not so impressed they had to wait for their tea yesrterday because he wanted to play!! think their tummies were girgling a lot by the time they got to their tea!!

try8ng to improve my energy levels but not easy - have an appointment for TB test tomorrow - bloods to see if i have been in contact with TB that is. lovely nurse phoned me up today.

enjoy the sun keep smiling x

  • morning

a breeze this morning which is quite nice. Had to get up early to go and get C spot bloods done, should get results next week when i get CT scan. also have the fun of sputum pots to do lol. got a little emotional due to tiredness Rolo decideed that fter my meds at 2am i had to be kept awake until he got fed at 6am then i had 2 hours sleep before i had to get up. Met the respiratory nurse too, who is also the TB nurse for assessment to see what she thought. she will then retell back to the consultant with whatever she thinks. - another limbo.

    hoping everyone ok.

the hotel a la mafia is coming along the builders got threatened yesterday that if they did not finish by the end of the month they would not get paid. they nearly walked out until they realised that this was actually a profitable job and they wouldnt get another one that good in the area. (susopect the wifes also had a voice in their descicions - another kind of threat!!). the main structure is not nearly done so it looks like it is on track and the manah=ger is pleasantly pleased he is going round beaming and being nice to everyone to the relief of the habitants.

little Terry has put on weight still he is now 202g really pleased he is doing well. the other two hogs are also ok, they had a bit of a tiff last night obviously because they were separate last night. the pgeons were waiting for their breakfast this morning whilst we were outside.

have a good day keep smiling xx
